Hey Chicagoans -- I would have started this in the ISO forum(s), but I'm writing more of curiosity before I start thinking trades. How accessible is Straight Jacket? How expensive? Those of you who've had it, tell me about it. I've liked everything I've had from Revolution Brewing and hoped to get some more Chicago beers (not just Rev) into my life this year. I ask these question because, honestly, what would someone look for in return? If it's one of those, "If you're looking for Straight Jacket, be willing to offer Heady Topper or Hill Farmstead," I'll have to just end it here because, well, I don't have any of those highly-sought after beers, but I do have excellent access to many, many great New England beers. Thanks for your help. And, like I said, I know it's not a trading forum, but if you have any offers or Chicago suggestions, send them my way! Cheers!
It's $15 are brewery but may be out. $18ish in stores. Not terribly hard to get. Sits on shelves for months at some spots.
Or the helpful BA's from the specific region this beer is brewed/sold could just help me out with my questions regarding taste and availability. But thanks for your input!
For instance, "Hey, this is super easy to get and delicious!" or "I see you're into barleywines. In my opinion, you should opt for ___________ instead. Straight Jacket is just okay."
Binny's by me had a stack of about 4 cases of them. It was $18. Was tempted to by one. Wonder if they age well?
It's not too hard to find in Chicago. All of the limited Revolution releases seem to follow a similar pattern: Sells out at Binnys and other craft beer stores, price is jacked up a few dollars at small liquor stores and it sits for a while, and is fairly unlimited around release at the brewery itself. Despite being one of Revolution's best bottle releases, it is probably the least popular of their limited releases. I assume the style just hasn't quite hit mainstream popularity yet. It's one of my favorite barleywines. Best to give it a little time to age, though.
Straight jacket should not be too difficult to trade for. Past years it sat at some shops for months. BA revolution beers seem to be sellng out a lot quickert than they used to though. Not sure what you have access to but $18 worth of somewhat limited locals should get one no problem
Last year it was easy enough to get, still sold out fairly fast but I think I bought one, drank it, then went back a few days later and bought another. This year I expect it to be a bit harder due to their Fobab gold medal and just more people in the chicago scene in general. Personally I thought it was a really really good beer when I had it last year. cant remember much about specifics though.
Barley wines are one of my favorite styles and Straight Jacket is definitely a formidable offering. Probably not top 5 but definitely top 10 for me. I have yet to pick up any from this release but last year, I bought 2 bottles and had it on tap 4 or 5 times.
All of the deep wood series has been selling much quicker than previous years... Any left in the taproom?
Yeah Straightjacket is really solid. Shipping two away today in a trade. If you're looking for more, it shouldn't be hard for someone to get their hands on. It's a really solid BA Barleywine...one of my favorites.
Straightjacket is awesome. I'm sure you could get some with a couple of Trillium Bottles going slightly over $4$.
IMHO, the most recent 2015 release is one of the best BA Barleywines I've ever had. I love all of Revolution's BA efforts, been drinking them for years, but I was always kind of "meh" on the barleywine. Trade for it now before the crazy Chicago beer scene figures out it's better than Sucaba and swallows it all up! If you get crickets on ISO, let me know....Cheers!
There were literally 8 cases on the floor of LP Binny's on Wednesday when I happened to be in the city. I'm sure there are plenty of other places to find it too. Definite sad face though at $19/bottle from Binny's, which one of the highest I've seen around. Had to make sure to stock up though for when @Davepoolesque runs out.
