Hm I appreciate those thoughts and may revamp my capping process, although it hadn't created a *noticeable* problem before that, maybe it was still affecting it to some degree and this was the tipping point. Interesting that this batch was bottled with caps from the end of the bag, so maybe they had been wetted and not used to much, because I do always put more than I actually need for the batch into the starsan just in case I need them.

As for the oxiclean, I just like to scrub the under side of the cap real quick with a sponge to make sure there's no dirt/gunk/dust built up on it so the StarSan does its thing more effectively.

Well done, Sherlock! I think we have a plausable reason for the OP's problem.

Sponges aren't very sanitary IMO unless they're pretty new. Lots of pores for god knows what.

You do realize that sponges can be harbingers of some of the foulest and nastiest bacteria, right? By rubbing the sponge on the underside of the cap you might be adding extra bacteria for the StarSan to fight off whilst removing what small amount of dust might be there.

Yeah I cringe at old sponges..... I use a new sponge every time I brew, so it only gets 1 day of use. I don't brew too often so it's not that big of a waste.
