I was at a local beer bar and they had Straub IPL on tap. Straub is a small regional brewery in western PA (St. Marys, PA) that has been in operation since 1872. They are best known for their AAL beers but for the past 1-2 years they have branched out to make some interesting beers: a Classic American Pilsner (CAP), an Altbier and now an IPL. The Straub IPL was my first opportunity to try one of these new type beers they are making. I tried to get my hands on the CAP and the Alt in the past but I had no luck; there seems to be limited distribution of these specialty beers.

So, back to Straub IPL. This is one interesting and tasty beer! As I drank the beer the wheels in my brain kept going round & round trying to come up with a description of the flavor profile and then BINGO: the word “perfume” jumped out. This beer had a flavor reminiscent of perfume to me. It is a tasty perfume! The beer menu at the bar had a description of this beer and mentioned a number of hops; from memory: Bravo, Cascade & Columbus. How these hops were utilized in the boil (and dry hop?) I have no idea but they all came together to create a tasty and interesting flavor/aroma.

Since Straub has a limited distribution area (PA & Ohio I think) this may not be an easy beer to find but if you do perchance see it I would recommend that you try it.

    Cheers!

I agree, Straub is really making an effort to be more creative and make better beer. Great for PA beer lovers, gives me a good reason to support a local brewery.

Did you get a chance to drink the CAP and/or Alt? If so, what were your impressions of those beers?

    Cheers!

I'd never heard great things about this brewery and was a little disappointed due to the name. Good to know there might be a reason to try some one day

I haven't had this one yet, but I'll keep an eye out for it. I've always enjoyed the occasional Straub American Lager.

I didn't get those, but I did drink a ton of their Mai Bock. I admit it was odd at first shelling out 9 bucks for a six pack of Straub but it was worth every penny. The American Amber is my go to beer.

I love me some Straub. I've been working my way through a case of the IPL and I've really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to seeing what is new next time I am up that way.

A new generation of shareholders/owners is pushing Straub's into a greater variety of beers, a trend to which Vince Assetta seems amenable. I heard the IPL was available at the State College fester this past Saturday; one taster I talked said it was pretty good.

Straub IPL was very solid when I tried it. I am excited to see what else they offer. My parents have a camp in Elk County, PA, so they drive past Straub on their way.

I also thought the Maibock was solid, but a little sweet.
