OK month ago said i was going to Senoia still am but my hotel is going to be in Fairburn GA.. I see Strawn brewing is there but only open a few hours on Saturday. The scores their beers get suggest it is well worth a visit. If i miss the tap room hours is this beer served elsewhere in central GA?
Coming from Oregon, you may be a little disappointed. Strawn does very standard styles, Amber, wheat, brown, etc. I take it that is the type of brews that probably sell down there in that market. Their beer is decent, but just not styles I look for. See if there is a taco Mac or world of beer down there. Look for draft from Orpheus, burnt hickory, creature comforts, wild heaven. These breweries have a larger beer portfolio, more of what a craft beer drinker from Oregon would be seeking to try. Jailhouse may be close and would be one to check out too. Welcome to GA, worst beer laws in the US!!
Draft only. They don't brew much. Don't brew anything exciting and won't find them in most places. They opened and hit the ground running but have seemed to lose any interest in making new stuff or trying to grow. Don't cry if you don't make it over there- not a must stop.
I was going by the ratings..on both here and BA..for the 'typical" brew pub styles they seem to get high scores. Its Fairburn..i will drive past on Saturday afternoon check them out. I was reading a bit..a few working guys who make beer ..it intrigued me because that was how my fav brewery in Sale, Santiam Brewing got started..but those guys expanded rapidly..and diversified into BA stuff with a couple of years.
edit.." that was how my fav brewery in Salem," Also strange how Taco mac has taken off..in my time in Atlanta in the early to mid 90s..it was really cool place in Virginia Highlands..never ever thought they would become a chain!
I don't think they ever took the risk of going full time with the brewery, everyone still works a day job. I think one of the original guys left because he couldn't do the 90 hour work weeks anymore. Their scottish ale is pretty solid, the others sort of suffer from batch to batch variations. It looks like their website has a "find our beer" link that shows you who is checking it in on untapp'd, that's likely your best bet. The guys I've met from the brewery have been really friendly and if it fits in your schedule certainly go hang out with them.
Well got to hotel at 9:30 PM. Nearest Publix...closed...so its gas station. Truely we are spoiled even in small town Oregon.... No local bombers...just two sixers of Terrapin..and one Sweetwater. Any way so drinking Hopsecutioner... Any way tomorrow is another day
Actually, they bottled two of their offerings not long ago. Scotch and Wheat if I recall, in 22oz format. Very few places picked them up but they were a decent price point, $4.99ish. If you're South of town your best bet would be go up a little North to Jailhouse. Great beers, much more selection of said beers, great guys too. There's very little action past the airport anyway but you'll have a good afternoon there.
I live a few miles from Strawn and know Will Strawn (owner) fairly well. He sticks to a few basic styles and never has anything super hoppy, barrel-aged, or any type of sours, so their beers aren't popular with the beer geek crowd. They don't want to be popular with beer geeks though... they want to make fairly mild, approachable beers that appeal to people that would otherwise drink BMC. I've heard one of the reasons they can't expand is they got stuck with a bum distro rep and can't break that relationship (sucky GA beer laws again). They seem to have a pretty loyal local following though, which is probably what's driving the high ratings on Untappd. Their Amber and Scottish are decent. I'm not a fan of the Wheat, but it's popular with the BMC crowd. Their IPA is really malt forward and short on hops, which isn't my thing, but again, the regulars seem to enjoy it. If you're already in Fairburn, they are worth a stop. They have a really nice patio area with a couple cornhole sets and giant jenga. It's supposed to be 65 and sunny all day tomorrow, so I would expect they would have a decent crowd out there. After your samples at Strawn, go up the street a bit to Oz Pizza... good pies and usually have 1-2 Strawn beers on tap (as well as a couple other locals). If you want bottles and don't want to drive far, go to GA World of Beverage, which is probably just south on 74 from where you're staying. As someone else mentioned, Ace in Newnan is a great spot, but that's a bit of a hike from where you're at. Beer Girl in Hapeville might be a little closer.
Short trip over..with all the family/ friend stuff really didn't have time for anything beer centered. Renewed my love for GA though..and did discover a really nice Irish bar/restaurant in Senoia.(.Maguires) really good food and a nice selection of beers..and the ambiance was just spot on for a Irish pub. Will be back in the summer with more time.
