You know, I didn't even look at the ratings here. For a lot of the Euro-only stuff RateBeer is a bit more reliable, IMO. It has a 3.42 weighted average there, a 3.65 mean average. The highest ratings there I don't necessarily trust. Honestly, based on the reviews and the description of the beer I would hesitate to spend $10 on a bottle of this let alone $150.

What he said, go read the 20+ euro raters on RB.... It's not that great, I'd gladly take a Double Black over it. My taster glass was more than enough for another person and myself.

Did you try Special Kay? So which one is better, Double Black or Special Kay?

Did De Struise's web shop sell any bottles?

The label on the bottle (that I have right in front of me) says 240 bottles actually. Guess the label above was just a first art-impression

No, but there may be an auction of the few bottles that are left I heard (on the website)

On rb, a lot of more traditional/conventional Belgium and Dutch beerlovers rated the five sqaured (I know quite a lot of them), they are not really into thick, big sweet taste explosions like 5 squared. For me it was absolutely fabulous and I think it will be stunning in some years from now, as will be the double black and the special-k by the way

If you like Barleywines I would agree, I personally cannot stand big sweet, syrupy beers.
However Double Black was quite nice, are they ever going to bottle Messy?

True, one should like flavorful thick sweet barley wines for this one! I asked about Messy, and for now they are only preparing that one for the CBC. No bottles in the near future I was told. But we should ask Bart if we want to know for sure

They were both great, but special-k needs some more time to fully develop, while Double black was spot on from the moment is was released, IMO.

Nope, I haven't signed back up for De Struise's web shop and I probably wouldn't have paid the price anyway... I don't quite enjoy high abv beers as much anymore.

I like barleywines more than stouts now a days, but like I said, I would take a Double Black over a 5 squared. As always YMMV.

Just wanted to say: The beer is available again at the moment at etregourmet. One minute ago there were 10 bottles :-)

I'm sorry... $200 for a bottle of beer right out of the gates is nuts. Hopefully others dont follow this pricing model.

You do realize it is for charity?

While I didnt and wont pay that price, those paying it can at least rest assured that it is helping some good people.

How much of this goes to charity, and how much goes directly to etre's pocket?

ahh, forgot about that, Struise was selling them for 100€, so I guess etre is making 30€ on each bottle.

Sorry for the correction, but I feel like lately many beers are pumped and hyped exactly because of limited availability and steep pricing even before their release. Maybe I'm wrong.

Just had this the other night with Urbain at my local HBS. Take it for what it is, and I thought it was excellent. Would I pay for a bottle? No! But it was brewed for charity to help save another brewery from financial troubles. So, if you wanted to help Alvinne (I think) then you bought a bottle. Not because it's the next whale.
