    Hello/Servus,
I'll be studying abroad in München for the next few months and am looking for great weekend beer trips. Any suggestions? I love the Weiss and Helles beer here but am looking to mix it up and try some different European styles and breweries. All advice is welcome!

    Prost!

Maybe visit Petting/Schonram and stop at Private Landbraueri Schönram.

Also the town of Traunstein is nearby. I have had several beers brewed by Hofbräuhaus Traunstein and IMO every one of those beers was excellent.

    Cheers!

Another vote here for Regensburg & Bamberg. And depending on the length of your weekend, and you train ticket budget, consider Köln & Düsseldorf.

The DB train system and German highways are so easy to use that all of the German beer centers (Munich, Bamberg, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Nuremberg, Regensburg Cologne, etc.) are easily reachable. Salzburg is no problem from Munich, too.
If you make it to NR-Westphalia, it's a very short ride to Mechelen, Brussels, Beersel, etc. as well.

Oh my, zoigl does seem like something truly special.

What's the best little beer place to stop in south of Munchen? Say, on a trip to Neuschwanstein and Zugspitze.

I was thinking Andechs. Anything else worth stopping by? We'd be renting a car for that trip.

We're also doing Bamberg via rail, staying over night, and possibly the same for Salzburg.

Kloster Andechs is fabulous.... Also consider picturesque Oberammergau and nearby Kloster Ettal - another brewing monastery with a lovely Doppelbock....

    Prosit!

Andechs is a must near Munich, but I wouldn't drive there. Mainly because that doppelbock is dangerously potent and you won't just want to have one. If you do drive, I'd make a full day of it so you have time to sober up.
The S-Bahn goes to Herrsching, so that's a better option IMO.

Don't they also have a Gasthaus* at Andechs? Or am I thinking of another..?

(*of course -- a Gasthaus could be just as dangerous... Hey, I don't have to worry, I'm walking to my room -- noch einmal! :grinning::flushed:)

Will any of them even be making doppelbocks during late May to late July (planning the trip for 2017, not this summer)?

Also, I'll be with my wife. Plan was to drink, eat at Andechs, then make our way to Neuschwanstein.

I'm not sure. I've always just taken the train followed by either a bus or a cab. There are dozens of hotels in Herrsching (thanks to the Ammersee being there), so sticking around for a night is no big deal. There are also 2 different S-bahn routes you can take back to Munich, so you can hop on the Starnberg Nord bus if it's more convenient, too.

The Andechs Doppelbock is year-round I believe. I've never not seen it, although I once read that it isn't sold on Sunday.

Train would work, but we're wanting to visit either Zugspitze or something else in that region after Neuschwanstein. We might visit Andechs on our way back, so we have more time to just sit around and enjoy the beer. I've got a year to plan

I assume that at Andechs that you get a liter of beer no matter what, right? No smaller sizes?

They definitely do smaller sizes. I usually stick to 1/2 liters so I can try everything.
I've often heard people swear that places in/around Munich only serve beers by the liter, but I've very rarely seen that. Augustiner Keller is the only place that comes to mind, and I'm not even 100% sure about that one.

That's good to hear. I saw people write about that, but I swore every time I watched a video of these places around Munchen, they had smaller, just as tall but narrow mugs that held .5l. I guess I'll see. Good thing my wife loves beer just about as much as I do!
