Stumbling Upon Hidden Treasures

I stumbled onto BA Old Rasputin and Old Stock Ale Cellar Reserve at one bottle shop, another bottle shop has about 5 different varieties of Firestone Walker BA beers; Sucaba, DBA, different Anniversary Ales, Velvet Merkin. I'll be picking at these slowly for as long as I can

 

Walked into a local shop a couple weeks ago--not a crazy small store by any means, but also not one of the heavy hitters around KC. Lo and behold Bourbon Barrel Biscotti Break is just sitting there on the shelf. The guy in the store told me he was surprised to get a case of Biscotti he didn't order, then realized it wasn't just any old case of Biscotti.

Two weeks ago I came across bottles of 2012 Juliet and 2010 Lolita at a different store, about the same size as the first.

Combine those with getting my hands on some Pirate Bomb! (that was not some random lucky find--took some work) and I'd say I'm living a charmed beer life the last month or so.

 

I'm not sure if I would consider it a terrible bottle shop or a good/terrible corner store, but a pseudo corner store/bottle shop across the street from where I lived once put out 2007, 2008, and 2009 Abyss by Deschutes as a "cellar sale" out with their original price of 11.99 a few days before my birthday a year ago. I feel my birthday came early.

That said I never bought IPAs from them unless I knew when it showed up. I was burned far to many times by their storage/ability to move product/purchasing habits.

 

Any bottles with the Pink Wax (Pappy Van Winkle) sitting around?

 

Not that I've seen, plenty of the purple (Elijah Craig)

Same thing happened to me, purple wax 2012, gold writing BR 1 on the bottle, but there was only one left. Oh yeah, and no discount, $35 I believe.
Swooped it because I haven't had a chance to try any of the series.

 

A few months ago I was taking my normal walk from the train home when I passed this divey little liquor store. I've passed the place dozens of times and never even considered stopping in. On this one special day, however, I happened to glance in and something caught my eye. A large red box under the front counter that was labeled BOURBON COUNTY STOUT.

I popped in and asked if they actually had any and low and behold, they were able to set me up with a bomber of the 2012 coffee BCBS. Delightful surprise.

Add in last year when BCBS came out and I walked a few blocks away from my last place and popped in to another dumpy little liquor store. I asked if they had any and the guy said he sadly did not receive a shipment of it this year but he had some from 2012 if I was interested. I mean, c'mon now, why wouldn't I want that? He sold a four pack to me for something like $12...I think he thought it might have gone bad because it was old. I wasn't going to argue with him.

 

When we were cleaning out the basement at work we found some well-aged gems, most notably a bottle of 2 Turtle Doves.

 

I walked into a somewhat unpromising store about 6 years ago and found a little trove of Samuel Adams Triple Bock on the shelf. I bought three. :-)

 

The other day I went into my local store looking for Indeed Rum King. Said it wouldn't be there til the next morning, but as I'm walking by the tasting table, what do I see on it but a bottle of Imperial BA Biscotti Break. I ask if it's for sale, he says it was but they must have already sold out of all the ones up front, but lo and behold he has one in the back he was saving for the staff but said it's mine if I want it!

 

Same thing with me on the Biscotti and Pirate. Walked into one store and saw it just sitting the BA Biscotti. Called around and found someone nice enough to set aside 2 pirate bombs for me. Gotta love the KC market sometimes.

 

I happened to just be at the right place at the right time and got a bottle of Parabola, which usually sells out in hours around here. I didn't go the store for Parabola, I didn't even know when it was going to be distributed to the area. I just happened to see it behind the counter (I always look there b/c the store keeps all the limited stuff there), just I missed out on Sucabba by like 30 minutes or so.

 

A bunch of liquor stores in Chicago and suburbs have stuff there months after. I go to Lolla every year and one time I went to a random liquor store in Villa Park and they had several bottles of Parabola for sale...in August!

Once got a $7.99 price check on a bottle of BA Speedway.

 

Found a four pack of Harvest Ale yesterday at the local dive liquor store. The beer buyer told me they were getting some Beard of Zeus in soon, too.
