    Hey German BAs
So I'll be in Stuttgart with my wife, brother, and sister-in-law for a long weekend in a couple of months. I understand that there are three breweries in town, Stuttgarter Hofbrau, Dinkelacker, and Schwaben Brau but I know nothing about any of them. Does one of these three stand our from the rest? I'm talking about quality of beer here of course, but also atmosphere and overall experience.
Any Stuttgarter BAs around to point me in the right direction?

Also, we'll be driving there so I'm considering picking up a case or two to bring back with me. Anyone know of a good getrankemarkt in town? I imagine there are quite a few, and a quick google search shows half a dozen or so, but I've never been and I speak little/no German(one language at a time, German's next on the list.)

I feel like there's one more but I can't think of it off the top of my head. I don't know much about the Stuttgart beers (or beer stores, sorry), but Schwaben Brau's Das Echte Schwarzbier is pretty good.

Dinkelacker and Schwaben-Bräu is one brewery. They merged some years ago.

This is one of those occasions where you'll probably have to sample and decide for yourself which one(s) you like best. I spent a day at the Canstatter Volkfest (Stuttgart's Autumn festival) and enjoyed the beer from all of the breweries.

Yea you're probably right, just was looking for some opinions as I probably won't have time to hit up everywhere I'd like. The Autumn festival would have been at the top of the list but unfortunately I'm going to be missing the it by a couple of weeks.

Not a Stuttgarter brewery, but you will need to look for Rothaus (Tannenzäpfle) if you haven't had it already.

I thought the post by Bryan the Beerviking was a noteworthy read. I wonder if there is any genuine impetus for a German version of CAMRA?

    Prost!

"When it comes to beer in Germany, your experience of Stuttgart and Frankfurt is the norm rather than the exception. Beer travellers go to the likes of Bamberg and Munich and think they’re typical – but *they* are the exceptions.

For the rest of the country, when it comes to draught beer it’s macro-brewed Pils or Weizen, often by a subsidiary of a multinational.

When I think about it – which I try not to do too often, as it hurts – it drives me nuts that there’s no proper equivalent of CAMRA to draw attention to this. Instead, there’s this Einsheitsgebot-based assumption that all is still rosy and world-beating.

Thankfully, things are gradually changing. It’s painfully slow though.

(By the by, I’ve not been to Calwer Eck for maybe 10 years, the beers were uninspired but OK back then. And I rather like a couple of the other Schwaben beers, notably the Marzen.)"

Hey, just wanted to thank everyone for the info.
I just got back. We stopped by the Dinkelacker brewery tap. Not a bad place. The maerzen was pretty enjoyable as was the schwarzbier. Outside of there though, the only local beer I saw in bars and pubs was the Stuttgarter hofbrau pils which, while not a bad pils, was fairly forgettable.
We stopped for a night in Innsbruck on the way back, too. Beautiful city, and every bar and restaurant we stopped in had a zwickl on tap. Good stuff.

Stuttgart = Württemberg = Wine country
It's like going to Saudi-Arabia and being disappointed you can't get pork sausages.

Innsbruck is gorgeous, isn't it? Do you remember the beer you had? I remember drinking a lot of Huber while in Austria.

Yes, i was aware of that going into the trip, and i didn't say i was dissapointed. In fact i was very pleased with how it all went, and i got to try some beers i would never have access to where i live.

Well i had the stiegl zwickl which was great, and even the gosser zwickl which i didnt expect much of was tasty. There were a couple others too but i cant remember what they were off the top of my head.
And yes, i need to go back when the weather's warm so we can spend some time hiking in the mountains around the city. Or skiing when its cold for that matter

You don't read "Gösser" and "tasty" in the same sentence very often. Unless there's a big "NOT" in between there somewhere :grinning: I generally stay clear of everything defiled by the foul touch of Brauunion...

If you ever come to Salzburg you MUST go to the Stiegl beergarden

Oh c'mon -- Stiegl is a big, corporate brewery taking over most of the marketing share of Austria -- how can you support them?

Actually, the Stiegl Biergarten is beautiful and a very fun spot.

Stiegl is a successful independent mid-level brewery, much like Augustiner or Bischhofshof. Aren't they ?
