I just had my first BCBW tonight and my first though after smelling it was "Sucaba?" tasting it only reinforced that. Very similar IMO. I have a bottle waiting for me in NY that do blind taste test with in a couple months.

They are both world class beers, Abacus is just easier to get.

Pointless like asking which version of Superman is stronger, they are both Superman.

It's hard not to wonder whether if Central Waters put their BBBW in 750ml bombers in boxes and sold it for $22/ea (rather than 12oz 4-packs for $10.99), it might be regarded more highly than either of these.

That said, I'm very very glad CW focuses almost all their energy on the quality of their beer, with very little spent on pretension.

Haven't had the Central Waters. Maybe in the future ill land some in a trade. Sucaba at 13.99 doesn't seem bad to me. Beats the hell out of $30 Bois

You nailed in. I had the chances to talk to one of the guys at CW during a tasting and he was like (regarding the endless increasing bomber prices, Space Ghost was $6.99 at that event for reference) I know what it cost me to make these beers and regardless of how limited I keep profit margins the same. To them it's all about the beer, profits come as a secondary.

What a great brewery, loyal patron for life!

I have a CW Scotch Ale that needs to be dealt with too, never had anything but an outstanding beer from them.

My local shop was selling the BW 4-pack for $37. I passed on it. Obviously no comparisons for me (not like I can find Sucuba w/out trading anyways).

I had 2010 BA Third Coast & 2009 Cellar Reserve Old Stock & they were near identical. Identical in that I almost wet myself both times at how amazing they tasted

King Henry > BCBW > Sucuba > CW BBBW; they're all fantastic

So glad they were able to mass produce BCBW in 12oz bottles for a great price. Really hope this turns into an annual release.

If you've got a sucaba, I've got the BCBBW. Maybe we can work something out.

Great is more of an American Barleywine though so it's a tough comparison.

I don't really see how I could do this because Sucaba fresh isn't nearly what Sucaba aged is. If I had some weird sort of time machine where I could do a 1 year old Sucaba next to a 1 year old BCBW, then I'd be interested. I had one of my 4-pk of BCBW last night and, while it's quite good fresh (I gave it 92/100) I think that it's really gonna come alive in 1-3 years of proper aging. From what I remember from tasting the 2013 Sucaba fresh fresh, I thought BCBW was better right out of the gate, but in the long term that doesn't mean much. We'll see

I have a very aged Abacus available, 2010/2011, doing nothing.

Drank my first Bourbon County Barleywine on Thanksgiving (also my birthday) and followed that with a 2011 Abacus. They were both delicious.

So I just finished my first BCBW. Is it good? Hell yeah! Is it better than Sucaba? I'm not sure about that. Definitely doing the side by side next week. BCBW smells delicious and maybe better than Sucaba. But I think Sucaba beats it on taste, more rounded and smooth. The BCBW seemed really fruity and though it is smoother than BCS there is definitely some alcohol heat and spirit like burn to it. I think Bourbon County Barleywine well actually improve with age where Sucaba is pretty perfect within its first year. Somebody send me some Central Waters to verify that it's better than Sucaba and BCBW :grinning:

It's not. Their Bourbon Barrel Stout, however, does give BCBS a run for its money (and it's also about half the cost).
