I bought a can of Coopers IPA (Thomas Cooper Selection) and while I heard it makes a decent brew, I would like to either dry hop it or just do the standard 60 minute boil to add some extra hop flavour. I love juicy IPA's so I was thinking that a combination of Citra and Simcoe would achieve the desired results but i'm no expert.

Any input from more seasoned homebrewers?

I would recommend a combination of Citra and Simcoe fot end of boil and dry hop additions.

For my palate Citra provide tropical fruit aroma/flavor while Simcoe provide piney aroma/fruity. These two hops are complementary for my palate.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the input. I think that would definitely be the safest bet!

FWIW, I would consider adding Amarillo. I just brewed an IPA with Citra/Amarillo/Simcoe. High hopes.

I hate simcoe. I would use mosaic, centennial, or Amarillo instead. :grimacing:

Is the can prehopped? If so do all flameout and dry hops. If you want more bittering add 60 but I think flameout and dry hopping would be enough. Hard to get juicy IPAs with a can but if you can add hops that would be more tropical like citra, mosaic, galaxy, Amarillo etc. all depends what hops you like.

I would assume that the can is pre-hopped due to the fact that you don't have to add hops when brewing!

I think adding Citra and Simcoe would be ideal for the type of flavour that i'm looking for. Thanks!

Here is one way you could do it...

I'm guessing that the IBU's of this kit will be fairly minimal. You could use a quarter ounce to half ounce of hops (depending on the alpha %) in the beginning of the boil and then add the remaining hops at flame out. That should boost the IBUs plus give you some nice hop flavor and aroma. If balancing is required, try adding a little DME near flameout to boost the gravity. Would be a bit of a guessing game without using software and knowing the numbers but this approach would add some fresh hop character to the beer for sure!

The can calls for DME to be added anyway so I will definitely be following your advice.

Now, what sort of beer software would I use? I've heard of Beersmith but that's about it. I'm also not brewng All-Grain and doing much experimentation (besides this attempt) so I'm not sure if it would be worth it to buy software.

    Thanks for the help!

BeerSmith is the software that I use. It's really good once you configure it to your setup and efficiency. After a few batches I had a good idea of my efficiency, boil off rates, etc and my brewing started to really improve. It's also a great way to start making your own recipes which is a lot of fun.

Good luck on your brew and if it's already complete, let us know how it turned out!

I haven't started brewing it yet! I'm hoping to start this Thursday if I have the time. Thanks!
