My buddy, who I have slowly coaxed out of the macro beer darkness, loved Dogfishhead Chicory Stout. He was devastated when they announced that it was going to draft only. This made me somewhat happy, since I figure that display of such emotion is an indicator that the craft beer hook has been set. However, I feel I now have the responsibility to find him a suitable replacement.

    Here's the criteria:

    1. Has to be a year round offering, widely available in the central PA/Maryland area.
    2. Has to a sessionable.
    3. Has to be reasonably priced.

I have also turned him on to Troegs Javahead, but I'd like some more suggestions to see if there are some I haven't already thought about.

    Thanks!

How about Duclaw's Sweet Baby Jesus? It's a pretty delicious Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter from Maryland. Think it clocks in at 6%.

There are not many local Porters/Stouts that are year round. But a few:

    Flying Dog Oyster Stout
Yards GW Porter (but a bit higher ABV at 7%)

    Non-locals but have wide distribution:

    Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald
    Bell's Porter & Kalamazoo Stout
    Smuttynose Porter
    Founders Porter
    Sierra Nevada Porter & Stout

Edmund Fitzgerald is a great suggestion. Hadn't thought of that one and it seems to be easier to comeby in the last year around here.

Well... there's plenty of options, some have already been made.

Sierra Nevada's Stout is a good option although it's ABV creeps up a bit there for "session" depending how you are... although it would probably be my first choice.

Don't know if Alewerks is available where you are, but their Washington's Porter is an option
I also like Troegs take on a somewhat hoppy porter called Dead Reckoning but that may not be what you are after.

Came in to say Edmund Fitzgerald and Anchor Porter for beers that are year-round and easily obtainable in PA.

Seasonal offerings in PA could be Philadelphia Brewing Co Joe Porter and Troegs Dead Reckoning.

I can't speak for central/western pa but SEPA has them at most distributes with most of their lineup.

Not year round but Wolavee's Alta Gracia Coffee Porter is in season and shouldn't be difficult to find at all.

This is a good suggestion. A lot of you guys seem to be overlooking the coffee component of Chicory, which is important IMO.

Definitely a love/hate sort of beer. I personally enjoy it, though not as much as Spring House's Big Gruesome (chocolate peanut butter stout).

Thanks guys. Some good suggestions here. I think I'm going to suggest the Anchor, Great Lakes and Sierra Nevada offerings. Some that weren't mentioned that I also thought about were Victory Storm King and Weyerbacher Old Heathen.

I'm amazed that some think Big Gruesome and Sweet Baby Jesus are sessionable. In full transparency, I haven't had either!

These definitely don't fit your own criteria number 2. They're both imperial at 9.1% and 8% respectively.

They definitely aren't sessionable. haha. I only mentioned Big G because Sweet Baby Jesus reminded me of it.
