    Hello South-Atlantic,

I'm going to be in Atlanta next week from Monday to Friday, staying in Downtown. I did some preliminary research on places to visit, and so far Wrecking Bar, The Porter, Brick Shop, Orpheus, and Taproom Coffee (because the concept sounds cool as much as anything else) are at the top of my list.

Is there anyplace I'm missing or anything in particular (maybe events or releases) that I should look out for? I will have a car, and I'm open to longer drives or day trips too, if there's something especially noteworthy a couple hours out.

Also, I know this isn't foodadvocate.com (and I've done some poking around on Eater and stuff) but I'm also very interested in unique or Atlanta-specific restaurants (probably in the non-fine dining category) if you guys have any suggestions.

    Thanks!

Eat at Wrecking Bar! If you go next Weds, it will be Wood Aged Wednesday. They always put something awesome on that was barrel aged. Do yourself that favor, also eat at Leons which is around the corner from The Brick Store. Great food. Most of Decatur is just beer and food. Twain's is right near there as well. It is a brewpub. Pretty solid selections.

Not sure how long you want to drive, but about 90 minutes away in Athens is Creature Comforts Brewing. They are doing awesome stuff, and it isn't yet distributed much in Atlanta outside of kegs. They tap one-off special stuff on Tuesdays. (Curious Tuesdays)

Just a reminder, you can't buy beer from breweries in Georgia, so you have to go to bottle shops if you want to take something home. Ale Yeah, Greens, and Hop City are some good ones to check out.

atlantabeer.com for the event calendar to see what might be going on.

If you want some good Q, while over near Porter and Wrecking Bar, hit up Fox Bro's BBQ.. Decent beers usually to be found, but the food is excellent Texas style BBQ, with the obvious southern favorites tossed in.

I think 5 Seasons Brew Pub is a good spot to eat and drink as well, it's next to HopCity on the Westside. Good beers, and the food is nice too, and casual place to waste an hour or so.

Monday Night Brewing is a good spot, IMO , if you want to visit a newer brewery.

Argosy for a bar on the east side of town usually has some great taps flowing.

Glad to see you've done your research! You can really make a day/night of L5P or Decatur. I'd echo the idea of eating at Leon's, which is owned by the same people who own Brick Store. Eater won't steer you wrong on dining options, but most of them are going to be expensive.

Taproom Coffee is cool, but also kind of small. I've only been during the day, and while it stays busy, you can actually do work there or carry a conversation. Definitely a coffee shop vibe (at least during the day).

If you haven't spent much time in the south, a stop by Mary Mac's Tea Room will check off your southern hospitality soul food experience. Kind of touristy (probably because it's clean) but locals go there too.

You'll probably see a lot of Taco Macs in your searches. That's essentially the Atlanta version of Yardhouse.

Vortex is relatively famous, either for its burgers or the giant skull entrance. Burgers are good but the place gets crazy packed. It's in L5P a block from Porter.

Three Taverns is making the best Belgian beer in the USA; check out the brewery or at least grab some bottles from whatever shop you hit up.

Thanks all, very much obliged! That gives me a ton of great-sounding suggestions. And if I can return the favor for any of you coming to LA (or California in general) let me know.

second most of these. I think that Community Q is better than Fox Bros. I will hold my tongue about wrecking bar food.

If you go to athens, creature comforts, five points bottle, cali n titos.

Cali n Titos is a great spot. Near 5 points bottle and it is BYOB. Great food and the scenery is pretty amazing. It's sits between campus and a lot of greek houses.

Mary Macs is a great suggestion. Leons is great. Hit up Krog City Market. Big indoor market where you can get a beer and walk around and eat from all these small spots. Spotted Trotter and GC BBQ there are good.

Athens Pizza is also my favorite pizza.

Oh and you should probably hit up one of the doughnut spots. Either revolution or sublime. Revolution is next to ale yeah in decatur.

You could also hit up Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles.

If you are up for something a bit more pricey with great cocktails (and a nice beer selection) try Holman & Finch. They are known for their "10PM burger", which is now available any time of the day.

Actually, H&F doesn't have to be pricey if you stick to just a few plates. I always want to try everything so it ends up being a small fortune.

And Ale Yeah! is a must for bottle shops. Hop City is worthy as well.

For burgers, skip the Vortex and hit any of the three Corner Taverns. Their burgers are light years better, they have a better beer list, and they aren't the trendy cool place so you can in/out easily without waiting in line.

Wrecking Bar and The Porter are a must, Brickstore and Argosy if you can fit them in. The Midway is solid too with a huge outdoor patio.

Agree with skipping The Vortex unless you just want some novelty burgers. Its fun for a group who has never been there before, but there is better food around town.

Man guys, Atlanta is pretty awesome. I don't think people outside of GA realize how much good beer and good food there is here.

Wrecking Bar is awesome but as stated above, I'd skip the Vortex. Decent beer selection but I was never a fan of the loud, club-like ambiance.

Tower Wine & Spirits has a better selection of beer than Green's does. Both of them are worth a visit.

Decatur alone is pretty much the standard for food and beer in the whole State. I'll never move to another city after being in the middle of so much awesomeness.

Atlanta really does have some of the best food around. When I was in Tampa for Hunahpu day, I desperately searched for a good burger. The 4th best burger on their list was 5 guys..

I'd like to know the same (but putting down this bone so as not to hijack a thread and/or start a "best burger" discussion). I'm sure the ATL has some great spots but the suggestion Tampa/St Pete doesn't pains me a bit.

I spent a lot of time googling, and granted I was drunk, but there didn't seem to be anywhere near the quality of burgers atlanta has to offer. One website yielded 5 guys as being 4th.. Not sure where, could've been something dumb like yelp for all I remember.

Also Atlanta isn't great for transit. I suggest uber. Get you around most anywhere you want to go for $20. Not a bad option.
