Been a member for awhile just haven't been back on the sites forum in a bit. I am new to sours and would love some suggestions. Ideally sours that are affordable and easy to get to start out. I live in Chicago, so I have pretty good access to a lot of brews.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

I second petrus, also check out duchesse, and all of the new belgium sours are pretty solid as well when you're first starting out. Be warned, if you aquire a taste for sours your wallet is going to hate you.

If you trade, start with russian river's Temptation. Its a sour blonde aged in chardonnay barrels. It isn't overly sour, but is very good

I do trade and if all goes well I'll get some RR. Just want to start small first. Want my wallet to have a little bit of a break for now. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

and not plan on having kids, sell your kidney on the black market, and find a street corner.

after that, buy something from Petrus, Liefmans, Rodenbach, or Monk's Cafe.

The Russian River sours won't break your wallet if you find a trader in the right area who doesn't try to maximize profit. They're only $13 a bottle and are available almost year round at the brewery. If I wasn't on a trade break right now, I'd help you out myself.

Lindemanns gueuze cuvée Rene is pretty easy to find and on the more affordable side as far as sours go

    +1

I started with Supplication and it was a bit hard. I almost gave up sours until I tried Temptation. It drinks like sour/funky champagne. Very easy (and delicious) to drink, imo.

How widely distro'ed is Petrus? I have never heard of them. Heading out the beer store today and will look for some. Any of their other offerings I should keep an eye out for?

I don't think I have ever seen it at a Wegmans, but Beers of the World stocks plenty of it.
