So I am cleaning out my hops drawer in a single brew. Looking to do a 5g batch that would total 160ibus. I am a hophead, so IPAs are always in season but curious what your thoughts are on those most enjoyable during October and November months: Rye? Black? What say you?

If you want to use up a lot of hops and make a tasty beer, why not try something hopbursted?

Hopbursted works, or a triple ipa, or an american barley wine, or a DIPA (pte is over 250 "calculated" ibu's). Either way you don't have to make it 160 ibu's. Just eliminate your bittering addition and use late additions (hop burst) like GreenKrusty suggested.

I made a standard IIPA with something like 10# 2 row, 3 pounds Munich, a pound of sugar and a pound of favorite crystal grain. It came out pretty amazing and I'd do it again for the cooling weather.

Hopped up barley wine is a good one for a cold day. 100+ ibu's and around 11% abv will warm you up nicely. Plus you could always save some for the following years and continue developing flavor.

Well, you mentioned a Rye IPA, and a Black IPA, so why not do a black rye IPA? Have you ever had Wookey Jack by Firestone Walker? Its a phenomenal black rye IPA, and I know there's a pretty spot on recipe out there

I would ask, what hops do you have that you are looking to clean out? That could influence the answer given.

A dry all Vienna IIPA sounds great. Throw in a little chocolate and carafa II and go the black IIPA route also.

I've done a super dry, all Vienna and Munich IIRA. Really dank, piney, pithy, resiny hops place super nice with that.

imperial red is always a fall favorite in my house...chinook, columbus & centennial hops. I wanted to give the best malz red x grains a try with this years version, but that still has a few brews ahead of it. So it maybe a winter warmer this year.

Same hops I use on mine. Just put my keg of this year's version on tap.

I believe that when the ibu count surpasses ~100, you no longer should bother trying to quantify your hop bitterness units. More correct is to simply say you plan to use a metric ass-tonne of hops. Or a king's crap-load, if you prefer imperial units.

You could go left field and do a hoppy ESB or American Brown Ale (although obviously not 160IBU worth).

A Stout or Barleywine could handle it, however, and be good for winter drinking both this year and next!

I like the imperial red idea but am curious to several suggestions for a barleywine or a stout... with that much hops, really?
Anyone have a recipe they are willing to share? hoppy stout sounds very tantalizing.

Would you mind sharing the grain bill? It's one of my favorite styles that I haven't brewed yet. It may be coming after next month's porter.
