We're taking a tour of Italy and then going to Germany for five days in the second half of October. I was looking for suggestions of places to visit overnight within 90 minutes of Munich (preferably south) that had sights and also a good brewery. We'll have a car, so access by public transportation isn't required. The hope is to end up for an evening at a place we want to drink at and not drive afterward. We're already going to do the tourist thing and take in Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau with a brief visit to Ettal. Thanks.
Jerry, maybe visit Petting/Schonram and stop at Private Landbraueri Schönram? Jeff (@hopfenunmaltz) recently posted about this: “On my list to visit next time in Germany.” Also the town of Traunstein is nearby. I have had several beers brewed by Hofbräuhaus Traunstein and IMO every one of those beers was excellent. I can’t provide any advice about sightseeing in that area. Cheers!
Jack responded first, those are on my list. Schönram is over by Salzburg, might be a ways. Have you been to Ayinger? that is pretty close to Munich. Hofbräu Tegernsee is on a lake at the start of the Bavarian Alps, and is very scenic.
Beer garden on the shores of the Chiemsee serves HB Traunstein's products [or used to]. That's scenic and great beer. Could take the ferry out to the Fraueninsel, too.
Berchtesgaden and Salzburg are quite nice with good beer and great views and sights to be taken in. If you like hiking, the ski hill at Berchtesgaden is a nice trek -- especially since you can take the lift to the top and hike down.
Füssen and Ettal are already covered... I'd also say Berchtesgaden has a shitload of sights.... Königssee, Kehlsteinhaus, Salt Mines.... Tegernsee is quite scenic, though the brewery did little for me... Mittenwald and/or Garmisch also offer great scenery, hiking, cable-cars.... not a lot for bier, though....
Nuremberg is about an hour away. Lots of franconian landbiers straight from the wooden cask, as well as a growing number of craft options. Plus, you get the sights, it is an amazing medieval city, with some impressive WWII stuff thrown around.
is one hr only in the ICE, the fast train. which is kind of expensive but if you buy with time you can get good deals. Nuremberg is 170 km north of Munich. In cheap train is like 2 hrs. I guess at 170 km/hr in a porsche through the autobahn you can make it in one hr too .
I concur that Hofbräu Tegernsee at the Tegernsee is a very nice place, lake in the alps with a good beer. Salzburg is a good option too, the city is beautiful.
A couple of you mentioned Hofbräu Tegernsee. Is this the place you're talking about? http://www.braustuberl.de/
Shameless plug for my buddy at Schussenrieder Brauerei which also has a very cool Bierkrugmuseum, about 1.5 hrs southeast of MUC.
You can now get Tegernsee (and Hopf) beers at their own bierhall in central Munich. Obviously that won't provide you with the scenery, but it'll save you the trip if you were just looking to try some new beers. They're okay, but not particularly notable, IMO. Ayinger is a stop on the main S-Bahn, so that's a really easy destination.
I actually like Hopf - they're the house weissbier at Tegernsee's Munich pub. Tegernsee isn't bad or anything, but there isn't anything particularly notable about them. I have had some buttery ones here and there, too. Never from that pub, but from the bottle.
That is the place. The Helles the wife had tasted stale. My export Helles was better. The Dunkel was OK. We enjoyed sitting outside looking at the lake and Mountains.
