I was killing it in the outer banks last week on my summer shandys

Westbrook Gose mixed with Two Roads Road Jam (Raspberry ale)
New Belgium Snapshot (great fucking beer) mixed with DFH Festina Peche
New Belgium Snapshot with Two Roads Road Jam (Raspberry ale)
Westbrook Gose with 2 ounces of Pinot Noir on ice

All damn good with no regrets.

Yes. That's where the confusion is created. In the UK, "lemonade" is a soft drink like our Sprite. In the US, "lemonade" is a drink made like the recipe in the OP's post: water, sugar and lemon juice. So brewers in the US read "beer plus lemonade" and used beer, lemon juice, sugar & water to make a shandy.

As either Churchill, Shaw or Wilde so aptly put it, (attribution is dubious) "England and America are two countries divided by a common language."

When we do hikes about mile 10 sitting on the shore of Lake Superior that summer shady is like the nectar of the gods.

Originally a shandy was mild plus ginger beer.It is occasionally asked for but bar staff aren't happy about selling what looks like a cloudy mess.
A present day shandy is beer plus UK style lemonade. Also common is "tops" which is beer with just a splash of lemonade.
What is called lemonade in the US is called "real lemonade" here.

My British Grandma used to drink'em all the time, she'd mix beer (usually Coors or something similar) with 7up. She said in Britain, only women drank them.

I don't know if it's a shandy but I mixed a SN Summerfest with some fresh squeezed grapefruit and lemon juice, triple sec, and a touch of vodka.. Pretty delish and had a nice cloudy look like the Sixpoint Rad pic I saw earlier... Not exactly sessionable though lol...

fill the rest of the way with shit beer.

I consider mixing beers an abomination, so needless to say I don't need my beer ruined with soda or that rubbish the Brits call lemonade. The one exception is if I am stuck with beer I don't like to start with...

The referenced shandygaff actually sounds like it could be pretty decent. Anyone have a reccomendation for a beer that would pair well with ginger beer?

not true the shandy is a drink for all but usually used as the ultimate lawnmower beer. something you drink when you come in from the garden absolutely overheated and need something cold, not sweet (NOTE NOT SWEET) and slightly alcoholic.
I grew up seeing my parents partake after a day in the garden if I remember rightly they used tenants lager a beer I haven't seen in years.
adding : I tried the Naragansett's Del's shandy and found it reasonable - cheap not sweet and fairly refreshing. The closest I have come to a UK shandy recently, I drainpoured the Harpoon and other versions (tried in tastings)

A lot of people ask for shandy on a hot day or when they are otherwise thirsty or driving. It's a very refreshing drink.
Incidentally one idiocy of our law (celebrated more in omission than commission) is that shandy cannot be sold in pints. That is reserved for beer and milk. It's OK to ask for a "large" shandy and get a pint though.Don't I just love the EU commissioners

If a shandy is not a beer, most of DFH products are not either (and many other brewers, I'm just using them as an example).
If beer+ingredient does not equal beer, then there are a ton of products out there on the beer shelves that need to be moved to other shelves.

Point well taken. I am of the 95/5 scenario. 95% of the time, I don't put anything in my coffee or beer. But, since all I have to drink is free Shocktop right now, I might commence experimenting. Hell, I improve the taste of coke by adding Cabernet to it... but it's Berringer, Gallo, CR, or the like. I'd not do that with a $20 bottle of cab.
