I have read that people don't trade in the summer but I was wondering what exactly one risks by shipping in summer. I live in Vegas where the temps can exceed 110 degrees and I am sure the back of the truck is even warmer. However if shipping bottles that are capped should I expect any problems. I realize caged / corked bottles could be an issue but I am more concerned about regular bottles. Also at what temp would a can explode? I realize that most beer shipped by producers is not always going to be in air conditioned trucks so no real difference than a fed ex truck. Appreciate any feed back as I am on the fence about sending boxes out.

Less about exploding than about just cooking the beer inside; especially for hoppy beers.

I know they are nearly extinct, but be very wary of trading any screw-top bottles in the heat, too. I had some explode in a hot Nevada day years ago. Honestly, if it was over 100 degrees I wouldn't send/receive a box. I'd be leery of that kind of prolonged heat damaging the beers coming or going.

You might be surprised about how many good breweries use refrigerated trucks to ship - exposure to high enough temperatures for long enough can cause the beer to go stale at an accelerated rate and does some pretty nasty things to hop compounds.

Personally, I simply wouldn't trade long distance in the summer - the beers you get back and the beers you send are not going to travel well if they spend a few days in the back of a truck at 120 degrees.

There's also a lot of breweries that aren't nearly as sanitary as they should be, the guys from GigaYeast & White Labs have lots of war stories... high temps can kick start any Brett & bugs in the bottles and things can go bad fast.

I hadn't even thought of that - good point. Imagine the gusher if you kept an infected bottle nice and toasty for a week then left it at room temperature for a few more weeks!
