Summers and summer alternatives

My summer beer of choice last year was Sixpoint "The Crisp." Not sure if it gets out your way though....

Summefest is phenomenal, a mainstay for me when the weather gets warm.

 

Ever since my last trip to Germany in the summer of 2010, this is mine: Munich Helles...this one is from Augustiner, but a couple of Weihenstephaner Original poured into a liter glass will produce the same effect.

 

I'm drinking Sierra Neveda Summerfest because it recently came out and its a good choice for hot weather, but I also drink their Kellerweiss. I mostly drink weisse beers during summer months. Many German choices are can't miss although American Wheat are very good too. Kellerweiss is great and another great brew is Ramstein's Blonde Wheat Beer. Michelob's Shock Top Lemon Shandy is a good choice if you like mixing beer with lemonade.

 

Last year I thought Southern Tier HopSun was the greatest summer brew, and this year it seems terribly thin and dull.

Not sure where you're located, but Dogfish Head Festina Peche (June release), Bell's Oberon, and New Holland Golden Monkey are my favorite summer seasonals...

However, there are tons of year roudn offerings that I drink a lot of in the summer such as Unibroue Blanche de Chambly, Stoudts Gold Lager, and Sierra Nevada Keller Weis...

A shandy (or Radler/Alster in Southern/Northern Germany) isn't beer and lemonade, but beer and lemon soda (like Sprite). Germans call lemon soda "Limonade," which is probably where the confusion comes from. Either way, I like a good Radler every now and then.

 

Schneider Weisse's Tap 1, "Meine Blonde Weisse", is a delicious hefeweizen. Really enjoying Fürstenberg's Edel Export as well, but I don't know about its availability in the US.

I suspect that Founders new offering, All Day IPA, would be a great summer beer. Very crisp and refreshing

 

The OP has a pretty good list of warm weather beers: “Whether it's saisons, various canned beers, hefes, quenching IPAs, Munich helles'... and Pilsners (Sierra Summerfest and Sam Adams Noble Pils).”

The beer styles that I would add to this list:

· Wit (e.g., Hoegaarden is typically widely available)

· Kolsch (I am not sure what Kolsch beers are available in New Orleans)

P.S. Another good summertime beer is Schlitz 1960’s formula. Below is something I just posted in another thread.

I bought a case of Schlitz 1960’s formula beer last summer and I was pleasantly surprised!

First off, the case cost less than $20.00 including tax. As I paid for the beer I thought to myself: I can’t remember the last time I paid less than 20 bucks for a case of beer.

Now, Schlitz 1960’s formula beer is not ‘earth shattering’ but it is indeed more flavorful than a typical BMC beer. They utilize a bit more hops (bittering and flavor/aroma) then present day BMC beers so it has more hop presence. They still use adjuncts in this beer (corn) but at a lower level; they use 30% adjunct in making this beer.

What they were going for in making this beer is just as the label say: 1960’s formula. This means a bit more hops and less adjuncts then present day beers. I thought this was a very tasty and pleasant beer given that it is an American Adjunct Lager.

I see in prior posts that a number of folks are on the ‘look out’ for this beer. I would encourage you to continue looking for it. In fact, why don’t you have a conversation with your favorite beer stores and specifically ask that they get it for you. In my humble opinion this beer is worth the effort.

Around here you can buy cases of Warsteiner or Licher Pils for 16 bucks, Ill take that over a Schlitz any day.

OP might want to try Koenig Pils, 23 bucks for a case of tall boys around here.

Hofbraeu dunkel is a great one, just make sure you buy the half liters.

Warsteiner is about $30.00 around me. I can get lots of good beer for about $30.00. Even if I can get Warsteiner fresh (which is not likely) it is not worth it.
