A month or so ago I noticed that the Cub up the street from me didn't have Dakota Soul on the shelf. I just figured they were out of it. A week or so later I was at another store that also didn't have Dakota Soul in stock. Neither store is a great place with a really good beer selection, but I was wondering if this was a sign. At the MN State Fair I was at the Summit booth and there was no Dakota Soul on tap. I asked one of the people pouring beer if Summit had discontinued it. She said she didn't think it was available on tap any more but thought that Summit still sold 12 packs. I really like Dakota Soul as an easy drinking every day beer. Has anyone heard of it being discontinued?
https://www.summitbrewing.com/brews/dakota-soul/ Still listed on the site, and still available at the tasting room. FWIW -- I never ask brewery questions of the crew pouring at festivals -- they're almost never full-time brewery employees and don't have a true clue.
I am not the one to ask around here what Summit beers are available anymore (Keller Pils) but I would not be shocked by the decision to discontinue the beer. They don't need two pilsners when the trend is to go with 10 different IPAs.
This. The people they hire for these festivals are not really informed a lot of times and just making a little extra money while pouring some beers at a festival. In the good old days you'd get the owners there pouring themselves or the brewers, etc but that has changed.
Unfortunately you are 100% correct. I like this beer but can't think of the last time I bought it so I guess I can't complain too hard on this.
To update, I was at Cub yesterday, and there was no Dakota Soul. I would be bummed if they killed it. My beer diet has been like 75% lagers lately, and this is a go-to.
There’s still a couple of cases in the cold box at my neighborhood package store (Sharrett’s, which almost certainly means that it is beyond their “best-by” date, and as I navigate the Summit website I no longer see any mention of their packaging code / packaged-on date. ). Aside from that, a quick Google search has it in stock and for sale at Elevated, Surdyk’s, and a couple of other package stores within a quick drive of me. Also, the beer finder on their website has it listed as being available at a good whack of retailers in addition to the thousand or so Cub locations. It might just be an issue with Cub and their ordering and supply chain? At any rate, you might want to use your smart phone and start actually phoning-around to a few of these places that claim to have it in stock.
I've found Summit's Beer Finder to be pretty accurate in the past. https://www.summitbrewing.com/beer-finder/
Just purchased a 12pk of DS at Liquor Barrel in Golden Valley Hwy 55. Exp date 12/24/22. They have a few cases in the cooler and on the floor.
Also saw 12 pks of it at Chet's Drive In LQ in St Paul last night. Other stores claim to have not just variety pks with Dakota but full on 12 pks of it.
As an everyday drinker, I preferred Dakota Soul over Keller Pils. Although Keller Pils was an objectively better beer, Dakota Soul just seem to hit the spot better for me. (But, I haven't bought any of the Twins-branded pils that is supposedly Keller Pils re-branded.)
Liquor Barrel on West 7th in St. Paul always seems to have 12pks of Dakota Soul, and of course they have their perpetual "manager's special" on all Summit 12pks. I'm a new fan of DS. This or Foamers will be my go-to 12pk of 12oz cans.
Drumming up an old thread. Any word on Dakota Soul, is it a thing anymore? https://www.summitbrewing.com/behind-dakota-soul-craft-lager-name/ You have to go back to November 2021 on the Summit website to find anything about the beer When this first came out, I remember how Summit raved about how the family farm connection in North Dakota would be providing the barley, (Midwest product). I doubt the lack of beer production has helped the farm much! What the hell happened? It/was a great beer, that I thought sold well. Anyone know the back story?
I don't know either. My post #11 here was the last time I bought DS. I think Saga Hazy, Twins Pils and Nialas took over. And perhaps DS sales/orders were underwhelming.
