Tried to add this earlier...but I'm stuck on what style I should choose. Nothing seems to fit. American Strong Ale?

had a sample at the Tastemakers forum last week...kind of an interesting amber ale. A little sour.

Sounds intriguing. I really liked the Kolsch & India Rye, but haven't been real keen on anything since. The idea of making something less common makes a lot of sense...never understood why people did a "special" series then put out an oatmeal stout or something.

The way the Summit series works, each brewer gets a turn to choose to make whatever beer they desire, with no constraints on ingredients, expense, etc. So they are choosing to put out something interesting to them.

I had a couple pours at the Nordeast Brewfest and thought it was great at the time. Has a few layers to it.

Yeah, I know how it works, & it's not unique to Summit. I just like "Brewer's Series" beers that are out of the ordinary. This Kentucky weirdness fits that bill for me.

It's only 5.8% ABV so American Strong Ale doesn't seem to fit. Amber Ale maybe? Or Rye Beer? Is it even an ale, or is it a lager? You could try emailing Summit to ask what they would list it as.

From what I understood, it is a Kentucky Common - a style of beer that isnt really ever brewed anymore. Id be interesting to see where it fit into the BJCP guidelines though.

This beer is good! I'm not sure how you would pinpoint a style classification for this particular beer. But, the liquid is very tasty!

I read that it's a California Common but that doesn't sound right. I will be picking up a sixer this week to give a formal review and pseudo "classification."

When are we going to see an Imperial IPA or Russian Imperial Stout from the Unchained line?

A redux of the Chocolate Pumpkin Porter anytime soon??

Love the series and brewing creativity though, keep up the good work Summit!

I kinda like that they haven't done an RIS or DIPA, lets them do unique things that no one else is really doing.

As much as I'd love a DIPA or RIS from Summit, I think that their unique style of Unchained is better left as it is.

Definitely go with Amber Ale, as it is somewhat catch-all.

Too much other stuff to be Rye. Not nearly strong enough to be Strong. And it is a Kentucky Commom, which has no relationship to a California Common.

KarlHungus - it is an ale, at least according to the links when you google Kentucky Common.

I have been waiting for this brew... I really love classic pre-prohibition cocktails and I've been curious to try a brew.
