Summit announced their newest Unchained Series: 13 Another IPA

Single hop, single malt, but be on the look out for two versions of this one. Mike Lundell mixed it up with a malt experiment!

    Cheers!

ST. PAUL, Minn. – (July 17, 2013) – Summit Brewing Company today announces the release of Another IPA, the thirteenth beer produced in its limited release Unchained Series. Another IPA is brewer Mike Lundell’s third Unchained creation, and it will be available in draught and bottles the first week of August, just in time for National IPA Day on August 1.

“I did an India Style Rye Ale for Batch 3 in the Unchained Series and a Black Ale for Batch 8,” said Lundell. “For this one my mantra was, ‘Keep it simple, stupid.’ So I did. One malt, one hop. Golden Promise malt, Target hops and Bedford Ale yeast from the United Kingdom. A true, British-Style IPA. But this is my third IPA, so naming Batch 13 proved to be the toughest part of the process.”

Since Another IPA is brewed in the tradition of British-Style India Pale Ales, it has a subtle complexity. There are herbal hop notes, a nutty malt character and a fruity nose from the yeast, making Another IPA not just another IPA.

To add to the Unchained nature of this beer, Mike brewed the two batches of Another IPA with slightly different malt bills. The first batch features Golden Promise malt from Simpsons Malt in the UK. This malt has been kilned to our specifications, resulting in a slightly darker (deep bronze) IPA with a fuller body. This brew will have an “Enjoy By Date” of 12/13/13 on the bottles. The second brew of Unchained 13 features a standard-kilned Golden Promise malt from Thomas Fawcett & Sons UK maltsters. Bottles will include an “Enjoy By Date” of 12/27/13. This beer will be a bit lighter in body and color (dark gold).

By changing this one component, this provides a rare opportunity to see what a difference the malt makes in the flavor profile.

The Unchained Series, which saw its first batch in 2009, allows each of Summit’s individual brewers to showcase their creativity by allowing them to break free from the norm and create their own beer. “We’re fortunate to have eight phenomenal brewers at Summit,” said Mark Stutrud, founder and president of Summit Brewing Company. “The Unchained Series is a way for our brewers to showcase their artistry. There are no budgetary restraints, no outside influences from a sales team, and the brewers are free to collect ingredients from anywhere in the world. As long as it’s legal, they have complete autonomy.”

    Another IPA Specs:
    Malt: Golden Promise
    Hops: Target
    ABV: 5.6%
    IBUs: 60
    Yeast: Bedford British Ale
