Summit announced their newest Unchained Series: 13 Another IPA

Single hop, single malt, but be on the look out for two versions of this one. Mike Lundell mixed it up with a malt experiment!

    Cheers!

ST. PAUL, Minn. – (July 17, 2013) – Summit Brewing Company today announces the release of Another IPA, the thirteenth beer produced in its limited release Unchained Series. Another IPA is brewer Mike Lundell’s third Unchained creation, and it will be available in draught and bottles the first week of August, just in time for National IPA Day on August 1.

“I did an India Style Rye Ale for Batch 3 in the Unchained Series and a Black Ale for Batch 8,” said Lundell. “For this one my mantra was, ‘Keep it simple, stupid.’ So I did. One malt, one hop. Golden Promise malt, Target hops and Bedford Ale yeast from the United Kingdom. A true, British-Style IPA. But this is my third IPA, so naming Batch 13 proved to be the toughest part of the process.”

Since Another IPA is brewed in the tradition of British-Style India Pale Ales, it has a subtle complexity. There are herbal hop notes, a nutty malt character and a fruity nose from the yeast, making Another IPA not just another IPA.

To add to the Unchained nature of this beer, Mike brewed the two batches of Another IPA with slightly different malt bills. The first batch features Golden Promise malt from Simpsons Malt in the UK. This malt has been kilned to our specifications, resulting in a slightly darker (deep bronze) IPA with a fuller body. This brew will have an “Enjoy By Date” of 12/13/13 on the bottles. The second brew of Unchained 13 features a standard-kilned Golden Promise malt from Thomas Fawcett & Sons UK maltsters. Bottles will include an “Enjoy By Date” of 12/27/13. This beer will be a bit lighter in body and color (dark gold).

By changing this one component, this provides a rare opportunity to see what a difference the malt makes in the flavor profile.

The Unchained Series, which saw its first batch in 2009, allows each of Summit’s individual brewers to showcase their creativity by allowing them to break free from the norm and create their own beer. “We’re fortunate to have eight phenomenal brewers at Summit,” said Mark Stutrud, founder and president of Summit Brewing Company. “The Unchained Series is a way for our brewers to showcase their artistry. There are no budgetary restraints, no outside influences from a sales team, and the brewers are free to collect ingredients from anywhere in the world. As long as it’s legal, they have complete autonomy.”

    Another IPA Specs:
    Malt: Golden Promise
    Hops: Target
    ABV: 5.6%
    IBUs: 60
    Yeast: Bedford British Ale

Note: there will be two slightly different versions released due to the grain bill in the two batches per Mike's playful Unchained spirit (see above in member's post). You're looking for two different "Enjoy By Dates" if you want to do a side-by-side tasting. The first batch with the slightly longer-kilned Golden Promise will hit stores/bars in early August. See video for some more details, too. Cheers! Chip @ Summit

Are the distributors/retailers aware of the difference? Or is this going to be a "dig through the pile" thing?

The sales team is certainly aware of it.
But it could be sort of a scavenger hunt depending on who ordered what and when.

Chip and Mike describe the differences adequately in the video.

(Also, if you are not-yet religious about checking date codes, it's never too late to start! :sunglasses:)

Haha yeah the date code stuff i've never gotten into. I was only indoctrinated into the craft beer world a couple years ago by my girlfriends brother. I've just gotten to the point that I can say i've got the seasonals timing down, and pay attention to distributions on special releases. I'm sad i'll be missing the Backyard Bash this year!

New video from the mothership featuring the two brews of Another IPA, a "study in malt on a large-scale" as Mikey calls it.
    Cheers,

Kegs/cases left the brewery for distributors this week. Heard of some already being in stores, but should be in stock by early next week depending on the location and business.

Heads up! Both brews of Another IPA will be available for side-by-side tasting at the Summit Beer Hall & Patio this Friday, August 9th from 3-8pm. Possibly again in the future as well... but definitely this Friday the 9th. Cheers!

Picked up a sixer yesterday. Looked for a date code while in the store and I did not see one. Brought it home for closer inspection and only 2 of the 6 bottles had a legible date. Two bottles had nothing at all and the other two the date was smudged or partially missing.

Any sightings on the 2nd (Best by 12/27/13) batch? All that I've seen is the first batch (12/13/13).

All I have seen is the 12/27 batch. I wonder if it is region specific? I am bordering the west metro btw.

I'm in the South Metro - one of the stores said that the distributors down here only got the first batch - don't know if there's any truth to that.

Different for sure. Earthy, a tad spicy, lighter malt bill. Never had a Target-centric hop IPA. Not really my thing but it is enjoyable and I can see how people will really like it.

Target would not of been my first choice for English hops. Don't know if I ever had a Target single hopped beer before.

Both are fantastic. The first batch, with the custom kilned Golden Promise is brewed in the vain of tradional, Eastern English Coast IPAs. Less dry, more malt accented, while the second batch with its lighter, everyday Golden Promise malt delivers that "New School" Western English Coast crisp, dry hop focused IPA character that is all the rage these days.

I prefer the first batch (12/13/13 bottle date). Love that malt and I think the beer needed it to carry this particular hop. Wish we would of gotten that batch in the west metro. I had to go to Blue Max to find the first batch.
