I try to do a road trip every year through Belgium to visit some breweries and stock up on beer. Unfortunately, this year my trip (combined with a business trip) is compressed and I'll simply be driving through Belgium on a Sunday. I knew places like Cantillon would be closed on Sunday, but I'm now seeing that the Dranken Geers, Prik & Tiks, and even the Carefour Hypermarts all seem to be closed on Sunday. I'm more-or-less taking the E40 through from east to west, and am reaching out to see if anyone has ideas/recommendations. I don't mind taking reasonable detours, but the path naturally takes me near Ghent, Brussels, Leige, etc. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Delhaize in De Panne/Adinkerken opens on Sunday. They have the standard supermarket selection, always seem to have lots of Piraat and Gulden Draak which are two of my favourites.

If you’re travelling east to west, it might be a problem because I think they close at 16:00 and it would be the last exit before the French border. It’s only a five minute drive from the motorway, just past the Plopsaland amusement park.

Bierhalle Deconinck is open on sunday morning. I don't know if it is on your way.

Oooh...I think that's a winner. It would only add 20 minutes to my drive, but I should have time that day. Thanks.

That’s definitely the place you want to go to. Amazing selection and prices!

Damn...I was just on my way and see it will be closing at noon (before I can get there). Oh well.

If you can get to near Leuven -- on the E40 -- by noon, ABS in Winksele is my favorite in the area: http://www.absdrinks.be/... not that anything about that website looks up to date. They have an affiliate somewhere else near Leuven that I think is also open on Sunday mornings.

A bit further west on the E40, just past Brussels, there's De Bierschuur in Dilbeek, http://www.debierschuur.be/start/contact/en, also 'til noon. (Don't overlook the lambic room in the back.)

Both have top-notch selections; I give ABS the nod for feeling a bit more homespun and, if I recall without digging out old receipts, cheaper. You could still hit some Sunday-morning grocery on route for the basics, Trappists and such.

For what it’s worth checked a few stores yesterday around Brussels and thought that Beer Planet was the best for both selection and price. The westies were the cheapest I saw (12.50) and they had a very good selection of 3F bottles as well as other highly sought items (Cantillon etc).

The woman behind the counter, Tatianna, was very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Would highly recommend anyone visiting to check it out.

Your insight has been very helpful on all the different Brussels forums on here so thank you. I’m heading to Brussels and maybe Bruges for a very condensed 2 to 3 day layover at the beginning of October and was wondering if you guys can give me some insight as to whether bottle shops are generally not open on Sundays. We’re heading to Cantillon on Saturday because I know they’re closed on Sunday but while my wife and I were walking around I’d love to “stumble” into a few more bottle shops on Sunday. Unfortunately we’re missing Zwanze by 5 days but will hooefully hit a Zwanze event in San Francisco. If you were seeking anything from California let me know and maybe I can bring something out there for you

Bruges is pretty touristy so I would suspect you'd be okay on a Sunday The Bottle Shop and De Biertempel were both off the square and quite good. You can also buy bottles in De Garre for takeaway and De Halve Maan and the Duvelorium have take away as well.

Thank you sir. I appreciate it. We're very fortunate to get tons of Orval, Chimay, Duvel, rochefort, st bernardus, rodenbach, la trappe, as well as Piraat and Gulden Draak and a fair amount of oud beersel and rodenbach here in the San Francisco area so I won't be seeking those but rather a little more obsolete stuff (yes 3F and Cantillon like everyone else).

There were some obscurities, particularly from De Struise, as I recall, which are hard to come by in RI. Not much in the way of Cantillon (classic guezue and kriek) but you should find some of the less ubiquitous Belgians at those places. The glassware selection was awesome too. I felt like a kid in a candy shop at The Bottle Shop but had picked up a lot of bottles at Cantillon so couldn't go too crazy. If you've never been to Brugge, you can easily make a day of it and everything is close to the square. Enjoy and report back!

Also a great bakery not far from Cantillon-Boulangerie Patisserie (Annessens location) that's a good stop to or from the brewery. Doesn't hurt to eat before all those sour beers!
