Sunk Punk. Would you pay £12 for a 341 ml bottle?

  1. Yes. Its a steal. More valuable than all the bullion on the Santa Rosa.

  2. No, no James Watt. I am not a victim of marketing.

Saw possibly the last 341 ml bottle of Sunk Punk in Edinburgh today. Reached out for it but then I saw...
Ah hell, I'll let the poll explain the rest.

    £12!!!! Heck no!

Though if I was earning big bucks I would.

I voted no. It's just too much - there's presumably nothing special about this other than the way it was matured. I can get multiple expensive US brews for that kind of money....

Having tried it at a blind tasting I thought it was awesome, I think it's worth it to tick particularly if you're splitting the bottle

I found it quite unique and extremely hoppy

Bottleshops out here have it for $40 (which i wouldn't pay for it)...very nice beer, i had it at the above tasting and very much enjoyed it. 12 quid...well that's pricey, but i always err on the side of you only live once.

I think I can live with myself not tasting this beer, it's just a regular pale ale that was matured underwater right? Nothing that special about it. I mean nobody else will do it again or has done it before I guess, but there's a reason for that - it's a pretty stupid thing to do, a waste of time and money. Just a publicity stunt like the Sink the Bismark and that whole strongest beer in the world race/fight/dick waving fest.

And there's sure to be many at least as good if not a lot better from other breweries at a fraction of the price.

I have not had a beer quite like it. I can point you to some far bigger disappointments at a similar or higher price if desired. Depends upon your willingness to eat the risk, as usual.

I've just reached the point, call it austerity fatigue or what you will, where things have to be pretty special indeed before I'm willing to pay top dollar.

So can anyone honestly say that Sunk Punk is twelve times better than Thornbridge's Jaipur (roughly 6 times the price and half the size) or six times better than Sierra Nevada's (BC) pale ale?

This is a dumb metric to be using in the first place

In what way? If the choice is between one Sunk Punk and 6 larger Jaipurs (which it is for the same money) there has to be a good reason for picking the former.Particularly as Thornbridge's reputation as brewers is as good as it gets whereas BD hasn't been very convincing in that regard.

Just firstly that the idea that a beer can be six times better than another is really immeasurable

Secondly price doesn't necessarily relate to enjoyment on an interval scale. I would gladly pay 3 times as much for something which is, say, 1.8 times as good on occasion. That's what a "treat" is.

Each to his own I guess. For some of us £12 is roughly a whole weeks worth of grocery shopping, so no matter how much enjoyment you'd get out of the mediocre-good beer (based off the reviews) it's just not do-able.

£12 for a weeks grocery shopping!!!??? Brown Rice diet?
But back to the question, no I wouldn't pay that for a BD beer. I have paid that, and more, for beers and have generally been happy to do so. But BD just doesn't cut the mustard, I recently went to a BD launch of their Libertine Porter, I'm glad i didn't have to pay for the acrid mess that it was. AB03 (I think) was on offer, a 'white stout' which was nigh on undrinkable. The only decent beer was the Lost Abbey collab, and as for TNP... please tell me that it's really an all year April Fool joke.

I'm no beer miser and the mathematics is a mere approx.
I love a treat and don't mind splashing out, I do however object to
being taken advantage of/being blatantly ripped off

I won't pay £12 for Sunk Punk. Just as, in their bar, I won't pay £3.70 for a half of IPA Is Dead and I won't pay almost six quid for a third pint of Anarchist/Alchemist.

When there was the occasional experimental / special beer by BD, I may have splashed out. But when there's something 'special' every other week... no thanks.
