We have a Morrisons opening near us soon and they've opened up a dialogue via a blog that has asked for suggestions about what LOCAL beers we want them to stock. I understand their view point of trying to support local industry, but there are already several independent shops which focus on local beer and if Morrisons starts selling these at a lower price, it'll put the squeeze on the little guys. So while they support one area of local business, they strangle another. Would it be so bad to suggest that they bring in more far-flung breweries? I'd kill for a local supermarket that stocked Magic Rock or Marble, but instead I'm stuck with the same beers that are stocked by EVERY other shop. Whaddaya think?

I'd suggest like you said, beers from other parts of the UK. Let the local shops stock the local stuff, and let the national shops stock national (or at least stuff from the whole country) stuff.

I think that's reasonable in most locales. Let the large newcomer that can absorb it better bear the cost of shipping things from outside the area.
I say most locales because if you have another national store nearby, Morrisons may figure that the local stores are more attractive to compete with.

Altrincham Waitrose had a similar display with 'local beers' and the beers were Lancaster and some from the Lake District which is strange and a huge shame because Altrincham's own brewery makes fantastic beers (including a spot on recreation of Boddingtons at it's prime) Manchester is the next closest which boasts JWL, Holts and Hydes as well as the afore mentioned Marble whose beers are of a high standard even bottled due to old fashioned bottle conditioning.

I too would like a supermarket with Magic Rock but Waitrose due stock Thornbridge if only three choices.

Local does however seem odd due to the fact that it's easy to get a hold of and might be in your local boozer on cask making the bottled variety pretty redundant.
