Ok, So I am a huge fan of this beer. I have only had the pleasure of enjoying the Gem a few times. The first time i had this beer I was completely amazed and mind blown by it. I recently had a got a bottle from a friend that has a West Coast connection. The bottle was dated 1/16/15. I decided to drink this bottle with my Girlfriend who also really enjoys sours (wilds). We both took a couple sips, the beer tasted nothing like it did the first time I had it. Kinda had like a band aid/ Plastic taste. Just seemed completely off to me. Wasnt to bad that I couldn't finish mine and hers. But has anyone else came across this also with Supplication?

Could be skunked, especially if it was shipped across the country in warm weather.

Hmm, that is a phenol off flavor. Looked through the BA reviews and didn't see any mention of that. I have tasted that in a couple of beers from Ohio's Rivertown Brewing most recently, and it was awful.

Skunking is caused by being lightstruck not by change in temperature.

Change in temperature doesn't normally affect beer unless it freezes it or causes it to stay hot for long periods. It will cause it to stale, and that also doesn't produce phenolic flavors like OP described.

Not only this but I stopped shilling out for RR sours (with exception being Beat) because like many other co's BA programs, reuse of the same barrels seems to really mute out the oak and other complexities. I just taste a lot of base beer in Consecration and Supplication with a lot less funk and oak. Just not worth the price for me when a whole lot of other breweries are dipping into wilds.

    That's not how skunking works....

Phenolic flavors are common and expected when fermentation comes from many Belgian strains and from some wild yeast strains. I'm quite sensitive to phenolic flavors and sometimes avoid beers that feature them. Ive noticed that sours, beers partially fermented using bacteria, often mask or remove phenolic flavors. Its possible that your Supplication is overly phenolic, but perhaps you have a batch that hasn't fully "soured".

I got the same thing, granted I had just bit my tongue and fixed it by putting a band-aid on it. Live and learn I suppose.

So they were shipped to you? Did you let them sit for a week or two or drink right away?

Yes, they were shipped to me. From California to Connecticut. They did sit for more than the day they came in living room. They sat for another 4 days at the most in there cellar, that is not overly warm or cold.

I've had probably a half dozen from that batch and traded a few. Never had any issues and none of the people I've traded to have had any complaints.
