New to all grain, i will be brewing an abrasive clone next weekend. The recipe calls for 1# of simpsons naked oats. My lhbs only has flaked oats. Is the only difference the lack of fermentable sugars flaked oats have? Or will there be a notable difference overall? Thanks for the help.

Golden naked oats aka GNOs are a carmel/crystal malt, so if you are going to use flaked oats/oatmeal you'll need a carmel malt of some kind to go with the other oats, IMHO.

Also, you''ll need to mash if you decide on using the flaked oats. (edit, never mind)
Another possibility...heat the flaked oats in the oven first and make them carmelized/toasted

Did not know that thanks. I have a couple of pounds of c40 so maybe i'll add a half pound or so with the flaked oats. We dont get surly in cleveland so i really won't know if my attempt sucks. As long as it tastes good i'm happy.

If you can, go with the toasted oats + C10. The GN Oats are very lightly sweet and toasty, which I think would be better approximated from C10 than a darker crystal malt. Plus, if your clone recipe is even close to accurate you'll already have English Light Crystal in there (~45 L), so Amercian C40 wouldn't be a good fit. If you want I can BM you my Abrasive Clone.

Just BM'd you...I had an epic fail last year on a DIPA and have been avoiding it until I could find a good clone to try...also just switched to all grain...would love your recipe if you don't mind

Was curious, are the 70/30 base malt split and hop bittering rates from the Brewery's mouth or from your own attempts at a clone? My clone has 60/40 and is very close in terms of malt flavor & body.

Most of their recipes with Simposons GNO use 0.5-0.75 lb according to their recipes on NB, but are around 9-10% of the grist (consistently); I went with 1.4 lbs GNO in my clone because it is ~9% of the grist, the recipe includes brewers sugar and because my beers finish too dry. Was spot on in terms of body, mouthfeel and flavor.

Cant remember where i got the clone from but it was 60% 2-row 40% golden promise 12 oz c20 1# gno and a pound of sugar. So it sounds like its best to back off the oats a bit. Calls for a bigger charge of warrior for bittering which should be fine. Hope it turns out well. Thanks for your guys input.

Just kegged 10 gals of 15# MO, 2# GNOs, 2#Pale Chocolate, 1# Black Printz...I just wished I had hopped it like Surly Abrasive.

I just finished a batch with GNO, and I think this advice looks like a good compromise. However, I never had Abrasive.

I know this is an old thread, but just curious, does someone have an extract equivalent recipe for Abrasive? I scored a 4 pack in a trade a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it, BUT it isn't distributed in my area so I wanted to attempt a 5 gallon clone batch. Any help would be appreciated.

According to their website, Abrasive is now just Canadian 2row and GNO for the grain bill. I think they used to use some GP and Brewer's Crystals.

It's a very good Citra beer, but paying $22 for 4 pints is squandered money, if you can brew it.

    $22/64oz = $0.344/oz (Surly)

    $40/640oz = $0.0625/oz (all grain homebrew)

    0.0625*64 = $4.00 for 4 pints of Abrasive homebrew

This is why I haven't bought any commercial beer yet in 2016. I keep thinking, "For a few more dollars I could end up with 5 gallons of this."

That's insane. I had no idea it cost that much. I obviously didn't buy it and now I'm not sure I would even if it were available for sale in Georgia.

But getting back to my question, anyone have an extract recipe for this?

I pretty much only buy beer if I run out of homebrew. Sometimes, I'll buy beer for the sake of having more variety or to sample a beer made with a hop I haven't tried. I don't brew primarily to save money. I brew because I like the results. The money savings is a bonus.

Ok, boss. Since I like your beard and your charming Southern drawl, I will make an Abrasive extract recipe for you before the end of the day.

How big is your kettle? How big is your fermenter? (not euphemisms)

Absolutely. My motivation for brewing is because I like it. My motivation for not buying much commercial beer is cost-related.

You, my friend, are a gentlemen and a scholar. I have a 10 gallon kettle and both a 6.5 and 5 gallon fermenter.

Correction...not so gentle bearded woman and a scholar here.

How do you chill your beer and how long does it take to go from boiling to below 80F?
