Hi All Had a trade set up for some Surly cans. First box arrived with two casualties - both Surly Coffee Bender cans. Trade partner sent a second box with replacements - both blew up as well. Not a reflection of the trader, but I thought I toss this knowledge out there if anyone is thinking of trading or trading for the Coffee Bender cans. In chatting about this issue, the other trader mentioned that there were some other reports of Surly cans leaking from around the top seam. Hadn't heard that before so I thought it might prove to be useful info to have in the trade forum.
Sorry to hear about that. I've received a couple dozen boxes of Surly over the years and have never had an issue. Curious to hear if others have had any problems.
I've sent a lot of Surly cans (have some going out tomorrow) and have never had an issue. *knock on wood*
Have sent literally hundreds of Surly cans out without a single casualty. However, when sending cans, it is wise to provide some protection for the top of the can. I have heard of the tab being bumped open if they're not. I usually put a strip of cardboard over to protect them or, even better, use the plastic 'tops' that come with certain cans (Lucette, Indeed) & snap them onto the top of Surly cans.
Wasn't there a thread on here a few weeks ago with a guy saying he got a shipment if surly from France 44 and the cans were all jacked and leaking? I think France 44 emailed him saying surly had a bad batch of cans. I think this happened or I'm just a crazy person but I swear I saw a thread like that.
There was a post on the FB beer group talking about some off-tasting cans. I don't recall anything about the cans leaking, though.
last month I had a few coffee benders sent to me that leaked. Kind of strange because the cans seem to have a perfect seal still.
Yeah that's exactly what happened to my Furious can, there was liquid in the ziploc bag, but the can appeared unopened.
I've had the same thing happen twice, from two different traders. Cans looked great, but both had obviously sprung a leak somewhere. bummer...
I've had a can from France44 leak. Nice thing about buying from a legitimate shipper is that FedEx just removed the leaking can and sent the rest on; and France44 refunded me for the full 4-pack.
All four of my Coffee Benders were leaking from the top after spending a day in the fridge. Sucks this happened after picking the beer up in Minneapolis.
Bizarre. Has anyone asked Surly about this? I don't recall ever hearing (or seeing) this issue in the past.
This recently happened to me as well, did a trade for some Surly that was flagged by FedEx for leaking issues. Managed to pick up the package and inspect the package later. The beer ended up getting reboxed and placed in a bag due to a leak. Very strong coffee aroma so I figured it was the coffee bender. Spoke to my trading partner and listed all of the bottles that made it back in good condition. Everything was accounted for so I went further and examined the coffee bender and regular bender cans. Ended up using my hop scale to weigh all of the cans. Found all 4 of my regular bender cans to be at 15oz. My coffee bender cans however were incredibly off: 1 coffee bender was at 15 oz the other 3 were at 11.5 - 13.2 oz SO there was definitely some leakage there! Odd thing however was that there were no broken seams or anything odd about the can. I couldn't find any leaks or anything! I'm assuming the dried beer formed a seal on the cans. Ended up opening one of the suspicious coffee bender cans and found it to still have carbonation on it. It was very good. Complete mystery to me. I wonder if its the can seal?
