Have not tried 8 yet but possibly NH Pilgrims Dole aged in BB is stellar IMO

France 44 still has a ton (like over 6 cases). I know its only been out 2 days but its surprising to see so much. They also have PumpKYn and Headless Heron.

A tortured soul was asking a clerk if Darkness was still available, poor guy.

I think 8 will sit on shelves for a while at many stores not hit by beer geeks. There is not a huge demand for oat wine beers and the Surly name alone isn't enough for many to spend over $20 on a bottle they may not even like. I saw 7 still on shelves recently.

That 'tortured soul' may get lucky at some store that keeps some releases on hold for special customers and will soon realize that special customer doesn't want another Darkness bottle and sell it to them.

True story. I was just saying that because its F44, a well known store amongst beer geeks this side of the river.

Hell, I hope I get lucky at some random store down the road (I love finding Epic BBB well after release).

    It's decent enough.
But no way should Eight be commanding the $20 + a bottle it is.
I believe it should be more along the lines of the $14 --15 upper tier Clown Shoes offerings.

I'm glad I tried it on tap before committing to the nose for the 750.

I had no problem paying $7 for a 10 oz glass to give it a shot though.

Surly's beer is overpriced. Enough said.

Yep oat in rye vs wheat in bourbon.

I had a glass of eight last night @ the Dakota and I've gotta agree, I don't think it is worth the $20/bottle. Interesting to try a new style and am excited to see what happens to it with age. I found my tap pour to have too lively of carbonation. Soft, smooth, mild barrel flavors. Lots of sweetness akin to a barleywine, but with less hop bitterness. Didn't have the body that I thought it might, given that it is oat based.

I haven't had sweet repute yet, so can't compare. This reminded me a lot of the Goose Island Imperial Brown Ale

The one in St Louis Park doesn't get much interesting either. They don't carry surly in cans like some of them do. I think the buying might be done at the store level in some cases. I've thought about reaching out to the manager or beer guy at the SLP location to express interest but haven't done so yet.

The bombers that they do get seem to sit, though I've never looked too closely at bottle dates.

F44 also sold through 100+ bottles of Darkness in 10 minutes. If it would sell out anywhere first that would be one of the places. Just don't think the demand is quite there for it, even among beer geeks.

I personally loved it... I love rye whiskey though and this beer hits so many of my favorite flavors. Reminds me of a combo of Backwoods Bastard and Central Waters BBBW. I could drink a whole bottle by myself, very delicious out of the gate and I think may age extremely well as all the anniversary beers tend to do.

I like the backwoods bastard comparison. Agree that it should age nicely and am interested to see what it goes.

The Backwoods Bastard + Central Waters BBBW is a good comparison. It also makes me think of what Founders Nemesis 2009 would have been like fresh.
