Generally speaking most places freeze new hires before they institute layoffs so its hard to imagine a world where they were "planning this for weeks". Even if you remove the union part of this this still shows them in a bad light. You don't continue to hire people when you are contemplating closing down, its just a bad practice and inconsiderate to the people you hired. These are people who clearly needed work and may have turned down other offers or at least stopped their job search. Some of them may have even quit other jobs. Granted if we stopped buying products from companies that treated their employees badly we'd probably stop shopping all together...

This is how I've always felt.

While what you posted makes sense, it's all speculation based on assumptions (probable assumptions though).

But it's a pain to onboard new employees, why do it just to lay off employees two weeks later? There might be more to the story. Or not.

If there is more to the story then you're boycotting a company and potentially hurting the employees that still work there.

There's only one thing I know for sure with beer...whether I like it or not.

I was in Minneapolis during an extended layover earlier this year and I really enjoyed my many Surly beers while stationed at the bar. But I likely won't buy any here though I do remember their Octoberfest being fairly tasty.

I agree that speculating that they closed because of them unionizing is not a good idea, its also why in my first post I mentioned waiting until all the details were out. The part of them hiring while considering closing their brewery is still a poor practice. Based on the most recent post it sounds like everything is working out and management and the union are figuring out a path forward (perhaps more of a future path forward).

Picked up some Coffee Bender today. Didn’t check the date, but wasn’t particularly worried given the style.
