I agree with this response. Surly (arguably) has the best beer in the cities, people love it here and can't get enough. There are many more/newer options since 2007 that people like to try but Surly is still preferred for most. I think (but may not be right on) that the hipster's who like beer would always go for a Surly and these newer bars may have opted not to serve Surly (which is certainly okay, but curious) or are on a waiting list. Places like Butcher and the Boar are new and have Surly, and (speculation coming) they may have Surly while the Bachelor Farmer does not due to no association with other venues, like the Butcher and Boar has with Bar La Grassa, who already has a Surly account (mutual investor). By the way, Butcher and the Boar beer garden = sweetness.

Also, I haven't been to MSP since early April, but last time I was there Ike's and that yuppie place around G13 both served Bender. OP, glad to hear you got a good stash full of great beer, you'll be the most popular dude in the northeast.

Again. What are the places you are referring to and how did you reach your conclusion exactly? It's really hard to have an intelligent, informed conversation without accurate information.

I stopped going to Pracna for awhile after the Surly decision but then they started having some really cool beer events. I don't like cutting off my nose to spite my face.

admittedly, i had trouble understanding the OP's post at first. not the most clearly written post in history.

re: jumping the shark, it actually usually means that a television show has become bad. it's not necessarily that they're resorting to gimmicks, it's that they've lost the quality/magic/whatever that made them worth watching.

it's sort of further metaphorically used for other things, but it's a pretty strained metaphor. e.g. it's hard to see how a consumable producer like surly could "jump the shark" without scrapping their core line. however, it's easy to see how a television show could "jump the shark" at any time (from episode X on, it "got bad". it "jumped the shark").

p.s. also, the arrested development shark jumping joke (unrelated to rest of my post).

Tilia was the first. I assumed they didnt carry because of the prior owner of Cafe Twenty Eight (next door), they said that wasnt the reason.
The second, Wise Acre. The waiter told me "Surly is not something they plan on carrying.."

PS. MSP Ike's has Bender on tap and Furious in cans..

Gee I hope this post was more clearly constructed. Cheers George Bernard Pahn

For those who don't know "jumped the shark" refers to an episode of Happy Days. While waterskiing, Fonzi, in his leather jacket, jumped over a shark. It was so over the top and out of the shows comfort zone that people realized the show had run its course. It's used to describe similar situations. Don't want to act like a know it all but it seems some are commenting without full knowledge. Hope this helps.

So we don't have any idea why Tilia doesn't have Surly. Perhaps they are on the list. Wise Acre doesn't plan on carrying it. Ok, maybe it's just a why bother situation. The fact is, a bar or restaurant doesn't need to carry Surly to be successful. Plenty of great beer out there.

i'll point out that i wouldn't have gotten the arrested development joke to which i referred had i not possessed "full knowledge".

while jumping the shark often refers*** to going to great lengths to recapture the audience's attention, it is also more commonly used to just imply that the show isn't good anymore (and that "this episode" is a signpost regarding the series' deterioration). e.g. the x-files episode "jump the shark" surely does nothing more ridiculous than previous episodes (nor does any episode in the later seasons), but the creators were responding to the general criticism that the show had "jumped the shark" AKA turned to shit (and it had).

*** p.s. apologies / you're-welcomes to anyone who hasn't been to tvtropes before. say goodbye to several hours of your life.

    ----

edit: p.p.s. notice that both meanings ("lost what made it good," and "making spectacular/ridiculous attempts to reclaim your attention") don't really apply well to breweries, since even if a brewery is putting out silly attention grabbing 1-offs, it still hasn't really "jumped the shark" unless its core line-up is bad too (but was once good!)... the phrase really doesn't make sense outside of an episodic narrative.

"Jump The Shark" sounds like a great name for a beer.
