Any bottle shops limiting this are making a big mistake. I look forward to trying it, but this isn't they type of beer that people stockpile like darkness.

I saw on social media that my local liquor store has it. Can't say anything about the price though. If it's sub-15 I'm definitely intrigued...

Does anyone know what ABV it is?

Not sure of ABV but had some at the taproom today and it definitely felt imperial. More like a smokey Dunkel than Hefeweizen.

so has anyone actually had this yet, or are we just getting excited because it's potentially a $12 turd rather than a $25 one?

there's 5 hads and no reviews so far, unless i'm missing something.

My expectations are surl(e)y not sky-high, but I have a hard time remembering a Surly beer which I did not find interesting. Even the ones which I am not a fan of challenged me. This sounds, if nothing else, different. As such, I am comfortable giving Surly enough money for a meal out.

But that's the difference between $12 and $25. I'm willing to take a flyer, at least for a brewery I have faith in.

It's 10% according to the release event info from yesterday.

As for how good it is, I enjoyed it. The smokiness is not the main flavor, so that's good in my opinion. It serves as a nice counter balance to the sweetness of the base beer, which I find resembles a good Weizenbock. Typical Hefeweizen flavors of banana and clove are present. Also some caramel and vanilla notes. I thought it was surprisingly easy to drink despite its double digit ABV and bold style.

Surly Nein was poured at All Pints North and more recently at The Autumn Beer Review. There are lots of people who have tried samples of it. I had Nein at ABR and thought was was ok. At ~$13 I'll pick up a bottle or two.

I'm there with you - it's a drinkable beer, but I'm not going to reach for a smoked hefe over a stout or IPA most nights.

From my 2 oz pour at ABR I definitely got that classic Hefe banana flavor and it was only mildly smoky. Not offputting or anything.

that at least it sounds better than the "tarred banana" from an earlier post.

I tried a sample at APN in July and the beer was not good. Too much smoke and fit the "tarred banana" description. I just don't think the beer was ready to go 2 months ago. Had it again on Monday at Black Forrest and it was much better, smoke in balance, not too aggressive, allowed the esters to come through a bit more. Moved into the buy 4-5 bottles for the cellar category for me.

Nein has a lot of Hefe banana flavor. I'm guessing the poster who wrote "tarred banana" doesn't like a big banana taste in their beer. If you don't like banana flavors, you will probably hate Nein.

From what I've heard (I wasn't there), the Nein served at APN wasn't a good representation of the finished product. I guess Surly had some trouble with getting the cask to carb up properly or something like that, and that problem made the beer a bit of a mess.
