This is a troll thread. This is too over the top to be real. If it somehow is real, wow, take a Benzo.

BTW, excited to have SYX on Saturday night.

Don't do it, gimme the five and no one gets hurt. Or sent it to the Bros, for the final word haha.

Actually I'm dying to try the Dissident from Descheutes. That supposed to be a world class sour.

Per Todd during the "Get Surly in DC" Salon at SAVOR 2012, Furious is "a very, very malt forward, hoppy, loosely an american IPA."

http://www.craftbeerradio.com/cbr-savor/SAVOR2012.TAS.8.mp3 (Furious discussion is around 14min in)

My interpretation of that statement is that Furious is not meant to be a "west coast" style IPA. Furious is Furious and isn't comparable to Stone, RR, (insert iconic IPA of choice), etc. However, I may be wrong.

Who are you?? And why is this over the top? Just curious about why people are hysterical about this beer -- long time member of the Minneapolis craft community, big local trader, etc...never heard of you bsp77, so nope, not trolling. Just have had a metric shit ton of Surly beers over the years (except, by the way, as I think about it...Surly 3 was @ the Great Taste last year and stole the show for me and my buddies, ahead of Black Note, Muerte Dark Lord, BB PtF, etc... -- KILLED it!) and am roundly unimpressed. I don't think they push themselves hard enough to be cutting edge on the new beer side (like Founder's, Bruery (which I don't love, but they try), DFH (same as Bruery), Russian River, etc...) and when they do try, it doesn't work that well. Their anniv. brews are typically kind of ho-hum and their regulars are even more so. They don't do 10% abv beers, next to nothing barrel aged and their off the shelf styles are nothing to write home about. It's just my opinion and all the posts above me are funny because they're telling me I'm wrong and they couldn't read further...all of this is based on what?? Furious = mediocre IPA, Cynic = subpar saison, Bender = ho-hum brown ale (Coffee, ok a smidge better, but whatever), Helles / Brutal Bitter / Surlyfest / Smoke = seriously?? Who cares? Darkness = better than DL, but on par with Rasputin. And on and on...I feel like Surly homers just don't either i) have the experience with other beers (which is ok!); or 2) just really, REALLY want to love this stuff. I think if Omar let Todd really go crazy, margin be damned, he'd brew some amazing stuff...but I think he keeps him in a box and want to maximize revenues (which I get and am supportive of) and listen, what do I know....they can't keep up with demand, so clearly I'm an asshole, but their beers "to style" just aren't that great.

Sorry Erich - these guys are right. You are wrong.

Seriously though, you are entitled to an opinion, but I am positive you are in the small minority, locally or otherwise.

Doug, I value your opinion...break it down for me. How am I wrong? How are they right (by just randomly opposing my wrong-ness)??

would gladly sit down with some five with you and discuss how it compares to other sour and wild ales, I don't know tons, but am always down for beer discussion, can bring a Juliet or something else.

That, actually, sounds rather awesome! I'd bring a Lolita and we could crack some Jolly Pumpkin / Russian River out of the cellar as well...seriously, we should do that! A Surly vs "style" side-by-side. I've had a lot of these, but again, it's all taste, would love to discuss the differences. Plus minnesotaryan, I see you on here tons, would love to meet in person!

To get back to the OP, we could argue all night about whether or not Surly is overhyped. However, it doesn't necessarily matter in that taste is really all that matters. If Surly's beers fit your taste profile, awesome. If they don't there's plenty of great options out there.

As for SyX, I'm still waiting for it to hit Roch, but I suspect that given the ABV it will age and it's profile will change. It could end up being phenomenal or a drain pour. Who knows, but for me it's exciting to see MN craft beer getting more attention and aging local brews to see how they evolve.

You are entitled to your opinion. However, Todd has made it clear in previous posts and interviews (someone please correct me if I am wrong or just happened to read too much into a comment) that he does not brew "to style."

Check this article out for a little insight to what Furious is supposed to be and some of Todd's views of brewing:
    http://www.aperfectpint.net/blog.php/?p=2188

I enjoy Surly's beers. I am not a homer to the point of saying they are the only thing I will drink. But, I do like the fact that every one of their brews is different from anything else I have tried (and I have tried a lot of different beers). I have not cracked a bottle of Sÿx yet (because a bomber at 14.8% or whatever is too much to drink alone), but I have talked to people I trust who say it is worth trying. I get that not everyone will like it. I also get that EVERY limited release (regardless of the brewery) gets hyped to no end on this site. Let's all sit back, chill out, and crack a beer from whatever brewery pleases us and stop complaining about the hype of the ones that don't.

    Cheers!

Just pointing out that you seem really worked up and could calm down. Maybe you are always like that on here. It is actually amusing me right now.

BTW, I have been here for years but don't usually take part in events and trades, so don't personally know anyone. I blame my three young girls for that. I would love to find the time to meet people on here, including you, as I am just messing with you regarding the Benzo comments.

Seriously, I DO think Surly is great, including Furious. Five was very good, but in terms of Sours/Wilds, it could have been better. If I have a real criticism of Surly, it is that they are a little overpriced IMO. Ultimately, Founders and Deschutes are my favorite breweries available in MN.

There, now you can't say "Who are you?".

It is late, so I will stick to 2 things. Maybe more later...

    1) west coast ipas are way out of balance. I like them too, but it doesn't make other ipas malt bombs. Plenty of malt and plenty of hops in furious.

    2) 100% Brett beers often don't have over the top sourness. Often you get that more from pedio. or lacto cultures (aka bugs). Brett does sometimes contribute sourness, but usually a less puckering variety.

What is the point of this pissing contest that happens on here every single night?

This whole "taste" thing is nothing but your brain's interpretation of chemical signals.

Sometimes its good, sometimes its bad. Some people get hot and bothered by Bud Plat. Some people think that Surly is a horse-shit line of beers.

There is no right and wrong when it comes to subjective experience.

I love this idea, I really do. Let's try to make it happen! If we have the 3 sisters covered, I'll pull down the Russian River -ations (Consecr-, Tempt-, Supplic-) and we'll try them all side-by-side. Would be a blast. And yes, bsp77 you're in! See how nicely these things all end?? Gotta love BA!
