I dunno, but it sounds as if part of the issue is you're matching them up against beers that more strictly stick to the standard styles. It seems Surly doesn't want to make just another IPA, Wild, etc. they want to do their own thing. I mean, if they wanted, they could just have played it safe and made Syx a barrel aged version of Darkness and had the world go crazy - they could have charged $35 a bottle and had it sell out. But they seem to consistantly push the boundaries as far as styles. You push those edges more and more and you're going to have more hits and misses. I mean look at Founders - I think they are the most consistant brewer out there when it comes to regular lineup. With that as a basis to set expectations, I think the Backstage stuff has been lacking (yes, including CBS). I know, "who am I".

My advice? Sometimes giving your opinion makes people talk about your opinion, SHOUTING YOUR OPINION MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE AN A-HOLE!! It's ok if you dont like a brewery, or think that their off the shelf line is ho-hum, totall ok. My question is why is it brought up? Dont like em, dont buy them, no need to try to corral the herd to jump off the Surly band wagon, or try to sway them to think like you do.

I used to think Tobasco was spicy, but now I don't. Did they change the recipe? Doubt it. Have my own tastes changed? Mos def!

What I find absurd is opening a discussion, then dismissing people who have the gall to disagree with the facts (or as some would call it "your opinion") as "Surly homers". It demonstrates an ego that is blown up to the point of bursting.

Surly Syx <Me. Knocked back a bottle on Tuesday and felt invincible...akin to the feeling I get when I listen to Ice Cube's The Predator. "Stompin' in my big black boots..." Love it.

I think that is the biggest problem I have with your thought process. You can review and judge a beer to style. That's fine. But the world isn't one big home brewing competition. Most of their beer is tasty, style be damned. Does it compare to beer x or beer y? Why does that matter. Is furious tasty, to me it is. Do I think Bitter Brewer is a damn fine beer? I most certainly do. Did I think Bourbon Barrel Darkness was sub par? Yup.

Statements like this, "I feel like Surly homers just don't either i) have the experience with other beers (which is ok!)" parentheses aside, smack of arrogance and are bound to upset many people (hence the troll comment). It's ok that you don't like surly. I think what drives up the hype train is that people like you, who clearly don't like the beer, have multiple bottles of it. Thus making it more difficult for people who do want it to get it. But what do I know, I probably don't have the experience with other beers.

I'm not going to mince words here, I drank a bottle on Monday, one bottle and I blacked out. My wife found me between the wall and the couch. I don't even remember what Syx tastes like....

I think I was somewhere between lit up and passed out between the wall and the couch last night during this post. Sorry to all for being kind of ( a lot of?) A d-bag last night... I started off looking for a robust discussion about my disappointment in Syk and is that a recurring theme now, to being kind of an ass. My apologies, not normally my style. Clearly re-reading this, it was a bit like telling Gisele she has a big ass...not well received (private to Gisele: you don't have a big ass baby, this was just a poor analogy to make a point...) We have a potentially pretty rad little wild/sour tasting perkulating out of this all though... Again, my bad!!

I disagree with a lot of what you said, but I do agree that this beer is fucking hot. I'll be trying it again, but I can't say I really enjoyed the first one all that much. Not sure why I expected a 15% beer to not be alcoholic, but I wasn't ready for the booziness. Might cellar one and try it when 7 comes out.
