    What's all the talk about a wild/sour?

Did I misread the description? It doesn't sound funky...

The argument turned more toward Five than Syx for some reason.

Of all the breweries and beers you dismiss in this post, this one, to me is the most bizarre. Curious as to which readily available year round brown ales out there you would consider superior. I have a feeling it's going to be a short list.

Wait! Surly Sucks?! My whole life is a lie!

    *Sets torch to cellar*

Seriously though, opinions are opinions. To me I can't get enough Surly (partly because I'm in the wrong damn state).

Also, quit calling Surly a sour. True sours require other bugs to develop their sour bite. Brett alone won't get it there.

    Finally, where's Pentagram?

I think Sÿx needs some time to mellow. Didn't personally enjoy it at all. In regards to Furious, a malt bomb it is not. I remember when it first came out and the Surly boys were adamant that it wasn't even an IPA. Of course now they label it as one, but I think everyone just sort called it that so they decided to stop swimming against the current or whatever. I prefer to think of it as a well hopped red ale, for whatever that's worth haha. I also remember Furious was not dry hopped at first, and it certainly was bit different than it is now. Lastly, don't go dissing Bitter Brewer. That shit is the shit. I really wish it was a year round offering. BB4L!

The stories of people solo rolling a bottle of Syx are quite amusing. Especially the Ice Cube "Predator" one. Personally I'm more on the AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted tip though.

It reminds me of my very early beer geek years (2003 or so) and drinking a whole bottle of DFH World Wide Stout (23%ABV version). Luckily it was only 12oz bottle, but I was lit.

My 2 cents, is Surly over-rated? Yes and no. They have a cult like following, of which even I'm not immune to. Is it the cool graphics? Is it the rock star status of Todd and Omar? Is it the (mostly) delicious beer that they brew? I would say all of the above.

I believe they used to call it an "imperial red ale". I still think that's a better description for it than an IPA.

Surly 5 is a beer that is only going to get better with age. Surly Syx being a strong ale, also a beer that needs some time to develope. The problem, like your teen years, is that you're a little pre-mature.

I disagree, the 5 I had recently was not as good as it was a year ago. The roast and toast was getting too big, the tartness fading and getting pretty sweet. I never found it to be phenomenal, but I don't think its worth much now.

    I mean, I'll have a taste if you're pouring...

Furthermore, the bright hop character in Syx will undoubtedly fade a bit, so it's hard to say Syx will get "better" with age, or just "different" with age. I liked it fresh, will open several more over the next 6 months and several more over the next couple years. We shall see what happens!!

This thread has been either a terrible or a brilliant way to set up a tasting and make new friends.

I personally am looking forward to trying this, as I've never had any anni. beers from Surly. Drinking a Furious(canned 7-25-12) and I've never had it this fresh, but I have had 2-3 four packs this year. Always been good in my book, and having it this fresh only cements my feelings on it.

Sidenote: I would be down for a sour tasting as well. Live in Rochester, but given a heads up, I'd be up for it. Have a Lolita to throw into the mix. Not sure what else I have, since a lot of my beer is still in boxes from the move in mid May.

Also, does BA allow "signatures" and the end of posts? Thought I'd put up my Untappd, Twitter, Google+, etc.

I don't believe signatures are allowed unless you are one of the Bros.
