Many people buy expensive beer, more so when it is limited, and I am one of them. Let's say Todd is $20 a 4pk of 16oz cans. That would price it out at $6.88 a bomber. Sue flew off the shelves at $7-$8 a bomber in WI. If Todd is less than $20 I won't flinch buying many cans of it if it is as good as advertised.

I'm definitely buying at $20. Even though I wasn't a HUGE fan of Todd. It was pretty good.

Since you're not a HUGE fan, but will gladly pay $20 for a 4pk, does that mean you're just a huge fan?

Count me among those who absolutely love this beer. Definitely one of the best IPAs that I have ever consumed. Will gladly pay $20 per 4-pack... if it's fresh.

Speaking of which, why can't we get fresh Furious in Iowa (other than the initial release)? The first allotment was well over 100 days old before a new shipment hit... and the "current" Furious was over 50 days old when it hit the shelves. Major disappointment to say the least. Brewery's fault... or distributor?

Even here in the Twin Cities I've noticed finding fresh Surly can be challenging. I was recently looking for some fresh coffee bender for a trade and couldn't find anything dated after 4/9 despite checking a wide variety of stores. It seems like they have been putting out some massive batches of their regular beers but canning much less frequently...

I agree it is frustrating to not be able to find fresh surly in the twin cities. Was hoping the new brewery would have fixed that. In the end i wind up buying whatever is fresh from other local breweries instead

When Surly went the distribution route & away from self-distributing (inevitable, I know, due to their growth) I realized how spoiled I was to be able to be able to find week-old Furious any day of the week.

That time is long past & I agree wholeheartedly that the age of Furious, Overrated, & other Surly beers has driven me to other options. I'm not sure if it's Surly's fault or the distribution channel just taking a helluva long time, but I wish someone would fix it. I miss fresh Surly.

Lately I've been frustrated by the lack of fresh beer in general and was beginning to think I was the only one who cared. Also, there should be a law that requires all IPAs to be refrigerated.

50 Days is 7 weeks. Not even 2 months. I would consider that pretty damn fresh.

Considering we got four day old Green Flash West Coast IPA 6pks a week ago and frequently get 5-10 day old stock of other big regional breweries like Founder's and Bell's, it's hard to get excited about beer that's already that old when it first starts delivering to accounts from distributors. We have pretty high standards for freshness around here. I pick up Overrated and Furious 4pks frequently hoping for fresh stock, but end up putting it back and grabbing something fresher from another brewery.

50 days is fresh when it "first hits the shelves"? Man, I feel sorry for wherever it is you live.

From what I've seen, most folks subscribe to the notion that IPA starts to fall off within about 30 days. I don't have qualms about buying a 5-6 week old IPA but I definitely don't consider that "fresh". It shouldn't take more than a week to get it from the canning line to the distributor to the shelves.

Another way to think abou it; if it takes 50 days to even get it to shelves, it will likely sit there for another few weeks to a month before it's purchased and then another week or two to consume it. At that point the IPA is 3 months + old. If you've ever done a side by side of certain IPA within a week from brewing and the same beer at over a month the differences can be pretty drastic.

I think Furious actually hold up well, as does Abrasive. But Overrated I'd want to drink as fresh as possible.

For experiements sake you should let buy a 4 pack and drink one today and then let the other 3 sit for a month and try again and see what you notice as far as differences.

Im not saying it is like that for every beer. But, if I saw a beer I wanted that was 50 days old I would ahve zero qualms about buying it.

As we were talking about the forthcoming Axeman, Omar suddenly brought up how much he admired the Sixpoint tall yet small 12oz cans. They were chewing on the possibility of going that direction for the bigguns, realizing that it would be an expensive conversion, but they are tossing it around
