Hello Friends - I'm planning a trip to SW MI to visit Transient, Greebush, etc. I was thinking about camping at Warren Dunes, but sounds like the DNR can be a bunch of Jimbos. Has anyone camped there recently that can share their experiences? Also, if there are other better locations (e.g., Weko) that are better, please list them. Thanks!
All of the parks have a no alcohol policy but I've never had an issue. Just don't be blatant about it and you will be fine. Warren Dunes is badass
Not all parks, here are the restrictions: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10365_10883_76139---,00.html But as posted if you are in a restricted area just be cool about it. My neighbors recently had to dump all they had at Hoffmaster. But knowing them, they deserved it.
VanBuren by South Haven allows booze but I grew up by Warren Dunes and have camped there many times without any issues. I use a cup and keep empties stashed and no worries. I much prefer the rustic sites and take my bike over to the showers to clean up. Much quieter in the rustic area. The down side of Warren Dunes is you will probably drive back and forth between the beach and camp, it's quite a trip on foot and even on bikes if you have kids or if it's hot. VanBuren is within walking distance of the beach and is a very short bike ride. Really can't go wrong either way. Have fun!
Check out the Livery and Cultivate when you are out there. Livery is about a 20 minute drive and Cultivate is just down the road from Transient.
Warren Dunes is great, especially out of peak season, but Allegan State Forest also offers great rustic camping. Not far from Saugatuck Brewing, New Holland Brewing, Our Brewing, and a couple of others in Holland.
Live in Chicago south suburb and wanna check out some camping in Michigan. Can't go to far and probably only do two nights max. My son and I are fine but it's my better half that will want to spend a night near shopping, shopping and restaurants. Any help is appreciated.
stay in chicago if shopping for clothing is needed, if not there are some real gems for food near warren dunes
Thanks for the input everyone. We stayed at Warren Dunes. There was some really great hiking and we were not hassled by the DNR at all. Can't say this is always the case, but worked well for us. Transient was a short ride away and well worth the visit.
