My Wife is heading off to Sweden next week. She wants to bring back some beer for me (good wife), wanted to know what the best Swedish beers were. I know that there have been some microbreweries opening there, but not sure which are the best. She will be in Uppsala. Any suggestions on what she should bring back?
The ones I would highly recommend would be Oppigårds, Jämtlands and Nils Oscar, but I would also ask what styles of beer you enjoy? Most Swedish craft breweries tend to have both ale and lager options, some offer more traditionally hopped lagers whilst others hop their lagers as they do their ales but a bit milder, and as far as ales go you got the full range althought they are rarely dry hopped to the levels expected by some American craft beer drinkers. Based on the taste of Swedish craft ales I would make the claim that they focus more on late boil hop additions than on dry hopping, and that their dry hopping is less elaborate than that of their American counterparts. If you want Swedish takes on American styles then there are plenty to choose from, but if you want Swedish beers which exceed solid American craft beers in quality you will be disappointed (especially considering the price factor).
Thanks...I'll check out the ones you suggested. In terms of likes....whenever I visit another locale I always try to drink the style popular to the area......so I'll try the ones you listed. Thanks again. Cheers
If she's in Uppsala, she should get some Slottskällan. Local to Uppsala, one of Sweden's first craft breweries, for some time had a rep for being a bit staid and samey but recently got new owners and changed the head brewer and they've been releasing some great beers since. See http://slottskallan.se/?cat=4 for a selection.
