I went to a bar close to my house this afternoon to watch a soccer game and get some food/beer. This place isn't a beer destination, only 20 taps but the selection is serviceable (though worthy of being in the directory). One of my 3 was the Sweetwater. On sniffing and tasting, I got a real odd flavor/aroma that struck me as almost a mix of sage and mint, but I couldn't put my finger on it. I asked the bartender for a taste from another glass, thinking mine was just dirty, but it was still there. She went back and checked, and apparently I had gotten the first full pint off of a new tapped keg. It wasn't bad, just odd. After leaving I realized I didn't think to ask how old the keg itself was, but they seem to sell a decent amount of Sweetwater, maybe a keg forgotten in rotation? By the time I was halfway through with the pint, the aroma/taste was gone, but it the hops still seemed muted. I know memory is a funny thing, but I remember the IPA being a lot brighter (read fruitier) in the hops, have they changed the hopping schedule?

It sounds like you went to a Carolina Ale House.

And they havent changed a thing in the 18 months that Ive been in NC.

Castaways (former James Island King St Grille). We had a Palmetto Ale House, but I think that lasted maybe 4 mo? and has been empty for at least a year after being Bret's Roadside Something.

There should be a ton of grapefruit in that thing if it's fresh. I have had way too many over the years.

    Mint/sage? Not in my book.

First pint off the keg... Could be dirty lines from the last keg of whatever???

Yeah, sounds like dirty lines to me. Or it could be there gas line may have over carbonated it and then turned the pressure down to adjust the pour and now it's a little off. Was it flat at all?

    No the carb was fine.

That's what I meant by the bright/fruity. Disappointing that it was muddled/non-fruit.

The bizarre part is the mintish flavor. At first I thought someone just spilled Rumple on/in the glass.

Yeah, the Carolina Ale House here in Greenville will also serve up puzzlingly "off" beers from time to time. Mellow Mushroom, too.

They are a Bud Light drinker's idea of a beer bar, which explains why all the craft is stale.

The first time I walked into the Greenville location I was like, "HeylookatalltheTVs! Lookatallthehotwaitresses! Lookatallthebeertaps!" Then I was like, "Hold on a second, a good half of those taps are fizzy yellow stuff..."

Fizzy yellow stuff and hot waitresses ain't such a bad mix, though.
