So I've considered storing and subsequently trading some 32oz 'Special Release' growlers from Cigar City. My main concern is, how would a beer hold up in storage and for how long, if it is in one of these growlers? If this is even feasible would the transport or shipping of something like this differ in any way from any other bottled beer?

CCB growlers are counter pressure filled, thus they will keep for a decent amount of time (i've heard in the area of 1 year). People are still hunting the Apple Brandy Huna growlers from last (sept?ish?).
Ive traded a few growlers from CCB and they ship fine. the new swingtops are a lot sturdier than the old screwcaps they used to use. Tape the shit out of the swingtop to keep it from popping open, then package it like you wuld any other bottle. I've noticed these growlers can typically go for a little more than $4$. I see some ridiculous ISOs, and im not sure if they get done or not (i doubt it, but maybe im just asking for too little), but ive gotten some cool stuff for them (RU-55 for White Oak Blueberry Jai Alai, etc...)
    hope this helps.

I personally don't trade for vintage growlers even if they've been properly filled. I don't think that a growler's trade value increases over time, in fact, quite the opposite.

As far as CCB growlers go, last year I had an Apple Brandy growler explode in transit to me. I know this also happened to about a dozen other people as well. I think this a was just an issue with the glass and that other CCB growler fills had been transported just fine.

I've had a few of peg's growlers shipped to me fresh, and they're awesome.

if memory serves, those were the older growlers, ive heard about this problem as well. but i havent heard about any issues with the new ones, and i have shipped 4 or 5 of them just fine, so im confident in their durability.
I do agree however, that they dont increase in trade value over time. better to either have them filled to order, or trade them the day you fill them (in the case of Growler Tuesday releases).

Agreed, I think it was an issue with the old glass/growlers.

Not all CCB growlers are counter pressure filled, and actually most of the "Tuesday releases" are not. However, most growlers you encounter are not counter pressure filled, but if filled and stored properly you can often still get some time out of them. That being said I wouldn't "hold onto them" to trade at a later date. If you want to trade them then you should trade them sooner as opposed to later, its just better for everyone. Also that way if the person receiving the growler wants to hold onto it till later that's their call. And as Matthewplus stated put a bag over the swing top and the get some electrical tape and tape the #$@!% out of it, and then pack it like you were shipping a baby seal, and then your good.

CCB had a counter pressure machine before the tasting room remodel. I was there shortly after the remodel and noticed it was gone. Asked Billy the manager about it and he said it was more trouble than it was worth and kept breaking so they retired it. All growlers at CCB are now bottom filled from the taps. (unless that has changed in the past month)

But all of their growlers are purged before they bottom filled.
