Also, as I have noted, when I get toasty, I like to give away beer. So here's a LIF that is sappy as fuck and will earn my vacay leftovers, which may include nothing, plus some Citrus Ninja and other goodies. Tell me:

    1) your dog's name
    2) coolest story about your dog
    3) why dogs are better than cats.

    2 wrinkles:

    A) scout's honor on owning a dog (also open to those who's dog has passed away and this can serve as a memoriam of sorts)

    B) I'm not picking the winner. @Haywire either a) picks the winner or b) if he has a dog and wants to enter, he picks the picker (I.e. He chooses someone who has no dog to judge). Why haywire? Because his posts strike me as someone who gets what "it" is all about and I think he'd be a damned good judge of a kickass dog.

Set deadline for entry Friday at midnight. We will have a judge by then I'm sure

    My pups name - Goon

Coolest story - He picked me. When I went to pick him up, he was 5 weeks old. Picked him up and he looked at me. I asked him if he wanted to go to a good home where he would be well taken care of, he licked my face. I know corny. But his brother, Monster, who I also picked up at the same time did the same thing. A few other doges from the litter were asked the same question...no licks from them.

Why dogs are better - Well none of my cats drink beer with me. Goon always wants daddy's beer! No matter if it's shelf turd or rarest of the rare, Goon wants a taste. If he had thumbs, he'd be on BA!

    Cheers!

So thank you again to Joel not only for the brew, but for the tits to drink it from, Ralph would have approved. I'll get a story together for the LIF when I can think about it for 5 minutes, but in the meantime thank you for putting it on.

Also, a little (ok, big) thanks to Bob for hooking me up with part of his HF haul:

    Awesome.

My boy Cooper was a graduation present (three years after graduation) from my wife. My law school roommate had a dog that I helped raise (chief) and he (roommate not chief) called me and asked if I wanted one one of chief's pups. Knowing the dumbass that chief was, I asked to see the mom. Lo and behold, she was the darkest, reddest, most beautiful golden retriever i had ever seen. I told my wife I wanted a light colored, female golden. We were fifth in line to pick the pup. There were 7 pups in the litter, only 2 female, and no dark females. So I said we will just know when we get there. Five weeks later, we go to pick "her" out, and see this monster puppy chewing on the other dogs' ears and exporing everything. First dog out of the box and by far the wildest said the caretakers. I bent down and he rolled on his back. I went to scratch him and as soon as I touched his belly , he started doing the "you hit the spot leg kick." This was my male, darkest of the bunch dog. 6 years later, he's my son's and my best friend. Don't even ask about his "mommy." Trust me, I'm third in line in my households.

    My dog Oscar
Best story. I adopted him while in beijing China. It tool a long time to get him here. We needed to hire a travel agent to pretend board w the dog. In turn purchase a plane ticket for Oscar. The agent then doesn't board the plane and when he landed in NYC we had to spend hours waiting for him to be released from quarantine. After 16 hours in flight and 5 in JFK we got our pup. But it was another 2 hours until we got this dog to my house.HHe was super scared but hey we saved him from the dog police (ie they sell dogs to restaurants) in Beijing.
So when he got home we introduced him to our other dog. She was a real bitxh to him and w/in 15 min Oscar bolted. I chased that fucker for another 3 hours w no shoes on all over our neighborhood. But he got away. After all that we thought he was gone.
The next morning as I'm taking thorns out of my feet I see him sitting in our back yard. Seriously? His street smarts of living in one of the largest cities on the street he found the scent. My wife spent a full week, every night and day outside w him earning his trust. Feeding him and just chilling w him.
Finally after a full week we got him. And now we couldn't ask for a better dog.
Here he is hanging in my yard. We couldn't cut the grass BC he was being a bitch and would run away. Totally mocking me

He's better than a cat BC he will jump in the car w me and hang out w me anywhere I go. He will also bite your nuts if he doesn't like you

BTW. Did this on my phone so story may miss some things. Bottom line 1200$ one weeks worth of stress and I have the best most expensive mutt from the mean streets of Beijing

    Cheers homies

And very sorry to hear about Ralph

I last had two dogs when I was still living at my parents place and they were the family's dogs, not mine. They were brothers we had gotten from a shelter and were small mixed breed. We had had them since I was in 4th grade. Sadly one day I heard a huge commotion in our front yard and the neighbors Bullmastiff had gotten loose and come over after one of our dogs. It was one of the worst things I've ever witnessed. Our other dog was inside when he heard the commotion and let himself out, which was an awesome trick they both had learned. He scared the other dog away but the damage had been done. After two days of trying to save Bandit, it was no use.

Shadow lived for three years thereafter but watching him without Bandit was a sad thing. He wasn't himself after that and who could blame him. Dogs, like people, are given a short amount of time. Cherish your loved one, canine or otherwise and truly enjoy the time you've got with them.

This isn't an active entry in @jshusc's LIF but it made me think of the two best dogs I've ever known.

    2 dogs...Madeleine and Coco

Madeleine is named after the French desert and my wife thinks Coco is named for chocolate when in reality she is in honor of Conan "Team CoCo" as we got her in the midst of the Leno/Conan BS!

Madeleine is the smartest and most stubborn for I have ever seen and Coco is the dumbest but most loving!

Coolest story about my dog would have to be the way they reacted when we brought out baby girl home. Madeleine (being the smart one) saw her as competition and preceded to ignore her as if she didn't exist. (Still does to this day). Coco on the other hand saw her as a new adventurous playmate and stayed by her side wether she was in our arms, in a rocker, bassinet, or crib. I see those to getting into very sticky situations together.

This is where I may get booted...I actually love cats! Super smart, very loving, and so fucking mischievous!!!! I love all animals and all are always welcome in my home (except cats sadly enough as the wife is allergic) so I guess dogs are cooler than cats because I can actually have one...or two...

Coco also like Bourbon County (and most stouts for that matter). Turns her nose up at IPAs (obviously doesn't understand that her daddy is a fan).

RIP Rallh Spier!! May your days be filed with treats and toys and may all your food have gravy on it...cuz who doesn't like gravy!!! Sorry for your loss and let me (us) know if you need anything! We are here for you!

Tonight I had a 2012 Bourbon County on tap in honor of Ralph!!!

Also changed my avatar in honor of Ralph! (Also so people will hopefully not associate me with that bad trading blackhawks fan!)

    This is Onyx (2000-2014)
Coolest story about him(man, there are so many) is maybe that my kids once brought home a kitten that they found, that wasn't even old enough to be away from its mother. We bottle fed that thing for a long time, but once it got old enough, it would find its way to my 95 lb pit bull and commence to sucking on one of his nipples! Onyx was surprisingly okay with this. After a while of that, for the rest of his life he had one large white nipple. I wish I had pictures of it. It was at least 5 times bigger than the rest of them and a totally different color.

Dogs are better than cats because of their will to make their owners proud...and that waggy tail that stands by the door anxiously awaiting their owners arrival.

Update: I bought my wife a Chihuahua for Christmas this past year and she also bonded well with onyx in the last few weeks of his life, but now my wife says she's a daddy's girl because wherever I am, there's a Chihuahua near by.

So, as you all now know, my dog's name was Ralph. My story, however, is about another dog (cut me some slack, ok?). This one was named Teagan (tee-gin with a hard 'g'). This dog was one of the handful of collies my aunt had throughout my childhood, this one was around from before I was born until I was about 10.

So, behind my aunt's house is a big open field, with a creekbed between the edge of the field and neighbors on the other side of it, and the bank of the creek is about a 4 foot vertical drop to the bottom. My aunt would take Teagan and I out for a walk and to play in this field, general running around and playing as dogs and small children are wont to do. The story takes place when I was about 4, far too young to know better but old enough to have a decent pair of running legs (which I've since turned in for a beer guy). It wasn't unusual for the Teagan and I to chase each other around, one being 15 feet ahead of the other; again, just playing.

Well, the story goes that on this particular day, I completely abandoned any amount of 'tag' we would play, and just bolted for the creek. 3 foot toddler + 4 foot embankment = something is going to get broken. Well, apparently I wasn't the only one who thought of this idea, and Teagan didn't just chase me down, he actively formed a barrier between the embankment and I, patrolling up and down to keep me from getting within 10 feet of the drop until my aunt could catch up.

As for cats, dogs are better simply because they give a shit. I grew up with my aunt's dogs, but only ever had cats in my own house. The one I had from age 6-20 was pretty special to me, and it was only once I had a dog that I realized why. He thought he was a dog. He would come when called, sit on my lap, give me kisses by licking my face, even roll over and let me rub his belly. I know now, that no other cat in history has acted this way... dogs, on the other hand, almost always do. So, with my childhood cat being the exception that proves the rule, cats don't give a shit, and dogs will be your best friend.
