I'll be taking my daughter to Syracuse U for a college visit later this month and was wondering where to go for the best beer/food near campus. Thanks!

I haven't been around for a few years, but Faegan's is good, and popular, and a 1 minute walk from campus. My favorite place to go for beer though, was J Ryan's on Water Street. Not far, but not a walk.

I'll advocate for the Syracuse Real Food Co-op if you want deli sandwiches and good bottles. It is right in the university neighborhood and a good stop for food if she does decide to come here. Also in the university area if you want a good restaurant is Alto Cinco. They have a generally good tap list and serve new Mexican fusion food.

I'll second this. Small, but a good place with interesting taps usually.

As a self proclaimed good beer hunter, for a nice bite to eat and a good beer-go to alto cinco on westcott (about two mins from campus). For a small yet well thought out beer selection, I will third on the co-op (also two mins from campus) those guys nail their selection and taps. For a great selection with average food-head to J. ryans. had Ballast point Sculpin on tap the other night. Good beers to go as well. Foe another great selection of beers with quality food but overpriced-head to the Blue Tusk in Armory Square. So I would lunch at Alto, pick up some bottles and stretch bread at the co-op, eat at Empire Brewery, and drink after at J. Ryans.

    Lunch/dinner/bars:
Altos for a solid 6-8 tap line-up lunch, blue tusk has good sandwiches and quesadillas and 69 taps. Best beer bar is J Ryan's by far IMO and you can get bottles togo/food there as well, Al's whiskey (Al's, suds factory, and blue tusk are all dt in armory). Faegans is a possibility if you're going to be restricted to the SU campus area...

Get some coffee/homemade cafe snacks @ the cafe kubal @ the Jefferson and salina intersection.

    Bottles:
galeville Byrne dairy on old Liverpool rd is a must stop, Syr coop, brilbecks, party source

Hoynes is THE best Irish bar in Upstate NY (my opinion only....based on a few things: owner is straight off the boat, food is excellent....Irish Breakfast served all day? yes, mo f-n please and aside from typical Irish beers, they regularly feature and promote craft beers).

Bull and Bear, while lacking on the beer side, makes up for it with (again, my opinion only) one of the best burgers in town...plus it's a block away from J.Ryan's.

Don't know the distance, but I was always a fan of the Blue Tusk when I'd go out there. Great food, good tap list.
