Im gonna make my first all grain batch. I know i should test and see whats exactly the effiency of my system with each batch, but im making some calculations and for start what effciency do you think i should aim for, starting low like 60% or thats two low? Im using a corona mill for the grain and i know thats not the best for it but is what i can afford atm. Tx in advance.
Would be hard to tell you, accurately, what to estimate. I can say that my first all-grain batch came in around 68%, but that's not to say I'm suggesting you use the same number.
BYO magazine, IIRC, assumes 65% mash efficiency in its recipes. I don't know how they came up with it, but maybe it represents some analysis of average efficiency they did. Just guessing. When we do the Averagely Perfect crowd sourced recipes on the forum, I use 70%, which I think is somewhat closer to the typical efficiency seen in people's posts here. So you might pick something between 65-70 to start. Maybe 65 if you are "no-sparging," or 70% if you're batch sparging. But nobody can really tell you what to expect. There are too many factors.
Yeah i understand. But you have to use a number as a starting point. I might start low with 60%, im my efficiency is better then i will get a wort with higher gravity right? Noobs questions i know lol.
65% if im sparging, sounds good. Looks like this will be a long trip of testing and recalculating. Got my book to take notes of everything i do. I think thats the best way to find out whats the efficiency of my system in the end
haha...I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you I'd say 65% is a good starting place...just remember to take your time and good luck with the Corona!
