Taking a break from ticking?

So I haven't been around much lately, mostly due to working all the damn time and a lack of anything interesting to say... but, as I sit here on this Friday evening with my dinner and a glass full of DirtWolf, I have this question (or a few questions, rather) circling in my head.

I've been into the craft beer world for just shy of two years now. About a year in, I became an absolute maniac always looking for new beers to try. Recently, however, my urge to find new brews, or even try new ones that are easily accessible, has almost completely diminished. Here I sit, week after week, drinking the same 3 - 5 beers regularly, completely content even though there's hundreds of beers (that are probably even better than my go-tos) out there, waiting to be tried. So my questions for you guys are:

    • Did any of you take a "hiatus" of sorts from ticking this early on?
    • Do you regularly take breaks from trying new things and just focus on a few favorites for a while?

Do what makes you content, whether it's ticking, the opposite, or something in between. There will always be more beer.

Lately I have been strongly feeling like I've neglected a lot of favorites, so I'm heading in that direction, too. It's the perfect time of year for it, too- cases of Sunshine Pils, Hop Sun, Summerfest, and maybe a half-dozen more just for variety's sake. Enjoy 'em at their fullest while they're fresh, and come winter, well, that's a whole other ballgame.

For sure, time to enjoy old faithfuls unless I stumble upon something on the bucket list...

I don't tick or review like I used to. I just grab brews that are easily accessible and I enjoy the most. If I stumble upon a new brew I just post it in the New Beer Sunday thread with a half review description. I might take a hiatus and just drink Yuengling on the weekends.

For me summertime is when I'm on "hiatus." When fall & winter arrive I'm typically hunting/ticking.

Having said all this.. The truth is- I'm always searching.

Just think, your "number" will stay the same.

    Come on, get to work!

I have been drinking "good" beer for about 3 or 4 years and I am drinking more new brews than ever and have no intention to stop unless I run out of money. I may have a little OCD, but there are way too many beers out there to not try at least 3 or 4 a month. One of your top 3 could be sitting on a shelf and you'll never know unless you try them all (which I realize isn't realistic)

I ebb and flow. Right now a lot of new product is hitting the market so I am on the hunt. But sometimes I will just kick back, take a break, and down some easy targets that I don't have to beg borrow or steal for.

So many beers...so little time. Three years a ticking and beer tourist...too much fun to stop.

I assume that your ticking activity has been focused on hunting and trying those styles that you know you like; I did the same. Personally, I use my hiatus time to try more beers from styles I'm not as familiar with; to broaden my horizons.

In other words, I'm currently content with my go-to beers, but actively experimenting with other styles. Not necessarily styles I'm completely unfamiliar with, but those I've neglected or over looked in the past. I find what I like, and roll those types of beers in to my ticking rotation.

What I'm trying to say is...I think everyone hits a temporary wall...and needs a break. I use that time to branch out and go for styles/breweries that I wouldn't otherwise.

Just looking at my review history, it's clear that I have slowed down.
My first review (out of 877) was, coincidentally, exactly three years ago today: Lost Abbey Angel's Share.
In that first year I reviewed 408 beers.
In my second year, I reviewed 258 beers.
In my third year, I reviewed 211 beers.
Drink how you like; you're not being graded.

If I have a session opportunity there will be no ticking. I will choose a solid beer that I will know will make for a great session. If I'm in a situation to have one or two, I'll try something new.

Well, some times you eat the bear, and sometimes ..The bear eats you. I used to like my swill merchants mix a six selection and now it's just not relevant to what I want to try in new beers.

I had an epiphany a while back: It isn't necessary to try every single new beer that comes out since many of them aren't as good as what's available regularly and it's an expensive habit.

Although I'll still try new beers (if it's one I'm really interested in) I'm at the point where I'd rather have something I know I love rather than taking a chance on an unknown.

Ticking means nothing. Drink what you want. I understand wanting to try new shit, but do it because you WANT to.

I'm only about a year into craft, but personally, I like to try at least 3-4 new beers per week. In between, I go for my favorites. (One of the nice things about being newish to the game is that there's a ton I haven't tried.) And at this point, I'm just as happy to try something and find out I don't like it-- at least now I know.
