The family and I will be flying into Munich the 3rd week of October (staying 7 days). Touring the southern border between Munich and Freiburg. I'm looking for recommendations for breweries to visit! In particular - breweries with interesting tours or rooms in which to stay/sleep. We are hoping to drink deeply of the bier history while taking in the many sites! Thanks in advance!
A friend of mine owns Schussenreider Brauerei in Bad Schussenreid (http://www.schussenrieder.de/), the Brauereigaststaette and the beer garden out back are quite comfortable and, being in Schwaben, relatively inexpensive. The scratch-made bread and Leberkaese are my favorites. Also, the beer stein museum is a great added extra. Be careful, even if your German is good, the dialect here is atrocious. They might offer tours in English if you contact them early enough.
Though I haven't been, I hear Löwenbräu in Bad Worishofen is good: http://www.loewenbraeu-bad-woerishofen.de/ I have been to Kloster Irsee, and it's real nice: http://www.irsee.com/cms2/braugasthof.php?site_id=6&cat=1&sub= Also, Kloster Ettal is gorgeous, and their DBock is wonderful: http://abtei.kloster-ettal.de/ Here are some BA equivalent links: Löwenbräu: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2208 Irsee: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1798 Ettal: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2432 Try this too: http://www.braugasthoefe.de/en/ Prosit!
Andechs (to stay: http://www.andechs.de/kloster-andec...in-genuss-fuer-leib-seele/klostergasthof.html ; and to drink and eat: http://www.andechs.de/kloster-andechs/die-klosterbrauerei.html)
That Waldhaus place we were talking about in the "Went to Italy..." thread on page 5 is also along the way.
I have been and it definitely is good -- great rooms, restaurant and -- oh yeah, beer. Be sure to try the Bierlikor (sp?).
