New brewing operation about to open in Syracuse NY across Erie Bvld. from the iconic art deco Niagara Mohawk office building. Google "Talking Cursive Brewing"
Good luck to them, but, if only average beer, like the rest in the area, I give them 12 months. Sahm is struggling, and have to relocate. Buried Acorn, meh, Empire, meh, IBU, WT Brews and on and on. Not sure their background, but hope not just seasoned homebrewers that secured a bank loan. It's an extremely difficult business.
Buried Acorn is awesome, not sure what the dude above me is talking about. That 'Cuse breweries have lagged behind the rest of NY does not mean the same will be true of every new place that opens. I'm excited to try TC next time I'm out that way, and we've got Onco Fermentations in Tully slated to open this year too. Things could be turning around out there. And that Niagara Mohawk building is one of my favorites in NY. Stunningly beautiful.
Trust me, I want nothing more than to have great breweries around me in Cuse. For my palate, the majority are average, which includes Buried Acorn. I still stop in every now and again to these places as they usually have one beer on tap I'll enjoy. I'll actually be at BA tomorrow evening. Cuse is still not a huge craft beer town. Population, median income, etc. So unless you are making great beer, I think the struggle is real. Too many dillys dillys if you know what I mean.
Yeah 'Cuse has always been a macro town. And places like IBU, Full Boar, Eastwood and Middle Ages certainly aren't helping fight against that. Not even just beer-wise; the taproom experiences aren't great at any of those places. BA, though, I really believe in. Their taproom was clean, well laid-out and had plenty to do. And yeah, taste is subjective, but I thought their beer was extremely impressive. Ghoster Blanc is a stunner, the Norweigan farmhouse is awesome and their pale ale was the kind of crisp-but-well-rounded take on the style we don't often see anymore. I wouldn't go back to any if the first four places I mentioned again, but I'll certainly return to BA, probably whenever I get a chance to check out Talking Cursive.
I don't get up to Syracuse much, only to visit my son who goes to school there and agree it is a blue collar macro town. Whenever i do go though I always stop at Now & Later which is a great beer bar with a bottle shop in the back. I was blown away last time I was there and walked in the cooler to find cases of Other Half, Equilibrium, Fiddlehead, IA and Lawsons fresh IPA's just sitting there. And the fact that Now & Later is always busy whenever i have been there tells me people in Syracuse are starved for good beer and would fully support a quality brewery. Hopefully Talking Cursive is that Brewery.
I mostly agree with everything here, and would like Talking Cursive to break the mold. I'm also looking forward to Onco. I hope it's good enough to hit on my way up or back from visiting my friends. For the ones listed (and one not), here's my thoughts...Middle Ages "new" taproom is better than it was, and the beers I think, while not the bombs that people want today, are still decent, with a couple that are really good. I haven't been to Buried Acorn, but sounds like it will definitely be on the list next time that I'm up there. I think, while there is nothing a modern BA considers exciting, WT Brews makes solid classic styles. I had a Grodziskie there a year or so ago that I quite enjoyed. Not mentioned, I think Willow Rock is decent, too. I think they did a good job with the resurrected Congress lager, and their lineup is mostly OK.
I actually really like Sahm, too. They kill it with older styles -- had a dope export stout and English mild when I was in -- but the hoppy beers are good enough to bring casuals in.
