Just stopped by the brewery for lunch and holy shit was I floored by this beer. So many of the hoppy beers I've had in MT have been underwhelming to say the least (haven't had Uber yet) but this one blew my mind. Literally the perfect blend of resin/pine/citrus I've maybe ever had. 10.2% 85 IBU and totally crushable. Almost no alcohol present. I would compare it to 2x4 in that they are both so smooth for 10% but Headwall was way less malt forward and had much better aroma IMHO, especially than the canned 2x4 we've been getting lately.

Chinook for bittering, mostly Amarillo with a little mosaic for late additions/whirlpool, and then almost all Mosaic for dry hop. If my math is correct their dry hop amount was 2.25oz/gallon.

Crazy thing is they never package this beer. Not sure if it's even available outside of the brewery. If it had any distribution or marketing behind it people would be going nuts for it. Got to talk to the brewer about the recipe and their process for brewing it which was pretty cool. Gonna have to get something similar on one of my next brew days. Brewer also told me this just one a pretty big hoppy beer award (that hasn't announced yet).

If you're in the Kalispell area or maybe see it on tap somewhere it's a must.

I have never seen it outside the brewery. They also do a collab with Draughtworks out of Missoula (tamarack has a brewpub there too) called citra mafia a triple IPA that is phenomenal as well.

There are some really good hoppy brews throughout Montana but it's definetly spread out and hard to find. A lot of the breweries are from very urban small towns and they don't have the reach across the state. Enjoy MT

Never actually been there, but the hoppy beers I had from Uberbrew in Billings are fan-freakin'-tastic. They're good people, too. Met the team at Collabfest.

EDIT: Looks like those two were Gold and Silver for the Alpha King this year. Uberbrew won last year. The upper Rockies are killin' it with the hoppy beers. Who would have known a few years ago? First NM, now Montana. Utah is due next...

The idea of New Mexico and Montana having multiple world class breweries would have sounded like a joke a decade ago. Utah has a richer brewing history than either. Not saying it's likely, but it's not completely crazy. The laws are wonky, but things could change.

The brewery's/brewpubs in UT make some very nice brews for the most part. Would not surprise me. It's other things that I have a concern for.

    Cheers!
