I was thinking of visiting Tampa/st petes area with my wife for a little vacation and to check out a brewery here or there. I'm not familiar at all with the transportation scene down there but could anyone enlighten me if I would need to factor in a car if I'm planning on spending 4-5 days there or do most tourists make their way around perfectly fine with walking/public trans systems?

    Thanks

Get a car or uber if both of you are going to be drinking a bit. It's very spread out.

Ok thanks. I went to Miami many years ago and I don't think I needed a car there so I just wanted to make sure. Are there a lot of other fun non-beach/non-drinking activities to do over in Tampa/st petes area as well? I noticed Busch gardens was there (I'm assuming it's open in mid-March) and also Universal studios isn't too too far away. Aside from that I'm not too familiar with what's there.

Check this thread. I think you'll WANT to have a car. There are ways to get around on public transport and/or Uber but @CGMLS3 is right: "very spread out" is accurate if not an understatement.

There's a ton of non-beach/non-drinking stuff to do here: Busch Gardens (Universal Studios is a solid 75-90 minutes away over in Orlando); Lowry Park Zoo; Ybor City; places to rent canoes, stand-up paddle boards and power boats; fishing; first-rate museums; parks with amazing mountain-bike tracks (no kidding: what the area lacks in topography, these places make up for in technical riding); outstanding restaurants; skydiving (Zephyrhills); gliding and hang-gliding (Polk County); spring-training baseball; arts festivals; the Greek community of Tarpon Springs; terrific music venues; and even the waterfront St Pete Grand Prix (27-29 March). The websites for the Tampa and St Pete/Clearwater visitors bureaus would be great resources.
