Going to be living in the area from here on out and was just curious, which site is updated more and used by more in San Diego?? Thanks!
TapHunter is good for pubs/breweries that actually update it consistently – TBH, most places update it rather haphazardly (AFAIK it’s up to the business to update it, not consumers). I don’t think I’ve ever used BeerMenus. To figure out what’s on tap, I usually search for the business in Untappd and then see what people have been checking in for the last 24 hours.
Never heard of Beermenu's before. I usually find Taphunter to be inaccurate, but it just depends on whether or not the bar keeps it up to date or not. I much prefer places that have live cams on their beer board like Beachwood and Alpine. Facebook can be good for updates too. If looking for a certain beer I usually use Untapp'd to see where it is pouring.
Taphunter, for sure. While not all restaurants/bars update it frequently, the menus are timestamped, so you can get a pretty good idea of what will and what will most likely not be there
Beermenus started on the east coast. I think it was NYC then Philly or vice versa, but that doesn't matter. It's pretty useless save for a few places. What I really miss, though, is having a resource like Philly Tap Finder (can't link without linking the entirety of this comment, but it's worth checking out). Since its inception, it's been the most reliable source for the city with by far the most good beer bars in the world. If I had the wherewithal, and some way to get some kind of compensation for my time, I would build one for SF.
I like to come to here or some other board and see what the regulars (like Sage) are raving about. It's never steered me wrong.
I'm in LA/OC mind you, but I use TapHunter, but with the knowledge that most places don't update regularly. However, I don't use the search function. I exclusively add places that I know update on a regular..or at least fairly regular basis local to me. Taphunter shows the last day the list was updated, which helps. Also, adding favorite beers helps also, because you'll get an alert when someone updates their list and one of your favorites shows up somewhere. I refuse to allow Pugachev's Cobra to come and go unannounced. I am pretty intrigued by the taplist.at though. I've used Untappd to deduce what is available around me as well...my only gripe is people are always drinking excellent beers at "John's Beer Temple", but I can never seem to find that place.
Yeah, TapHunter has the time stamps, plus the funny little empty/half-full/full mug icon, denoting how recently the tap list has been updated. It's not foolproof by any means, but being able to search by beer, see if anywhere has recently updated with it, etc. is a nice feature.
This is what I use religiously. It doesn't rely on the bars to update their offerings (which, from what I've seen, is very inconsistent at best), it uses Untappd check-ins. There are some inaccuracies occasionally (like when someone checks-in to a business nearby, like Carl's Jr. or something, that doesn't offer what they're drinking) but it is FAR more accurate than other apps I've seen. It's far easier to run searches than on Untappd, too, which can be a pain as SageO pointed out. Now if only we could get it to update bottle-shop offerings!!!
