Why would you attempt to open bottles without removing the tape?

The first tim I clearly I thought like most in this thread that the tape wasnt doing much. Then I realized I was wrong.

Subsequent instances of ruining openers like this was because I didnt have a utility knife handy and chalked up the previous rails to cheap openers. Which, the wine bottle openers were which is why they broke. But still, the tape certainly did its job.

Why not just pull the tape off for the subsequent instances?

OK, so I've been kicking around posting on here for a few weeks.

I feel like people seem to view tape as working or not working in terms of an all or nothing. And I just don't think it's that black and white.

If you drop a box - a heavy box - and a beer gets seriously shaken, I can see how it can create enough carbonation to force liquid out while the cap remains in fact (tape or no tape). But, I think what people fail to recognize is that boxes get jostled around all the time - even if they aren't dropped from 4 ft. I feel like there's a high probability that wrapping a bottle too tightly absolutely keeps a more secure seal, even if it does not prevent catastrophic failure.

I think the biggest issue is.... Much like shipping pet peeves..... Is generally done in excess

I feel as if it was one nice secure wrap around and no more.... There'd be less who dislike it. Just a feeling though

I do two strong, tight wraps.

With one, it seems like it can start to peal back.

A trader I know, who I very much like, creates a pull-tab by bending back 1/4 inch of tape onto itself. Smart idea. I am sure some people would be way more open if everyone did this.

Untaping is an absolute pain in the ass if the tape was stretched while wrapped. I thought it would pop off without scoring it.

This was my stance and experience with it when I posted in this thread.

Nothing against you or anyone else, but I am dumbfounded so many people have trouble removing electrical tape. I've never had an issue. You just get underneath one corner a little, start to peal, then it all comes off. Never experienced any issues like what people have reported.

Agreed. Part of the reason I think electrical tape is likely unnecessary is that it is so easy to remove. Moreover, even when pulled tight, it never appears to form any kind of seal.

As I said earlier, if you think tape helps, self-adhering silicone tape is the way to go. It is designed to make a seal, is easy to remove and doesn’t gun up the crown and bottle top.

Of course, I don’t know if it is even necessary.

Unfortunately electrical tape doesn’t do anything if you don’t stretch it. I’ve been relying on 33+ for over 20 years. The problem is that while it’s the best electrical tape without question, if you stretch it properly the seem almost becomes invisible unless you “flag” it.

At the end of your wrapping you fold a tiny piece underneath itself. Then someone can quickly find the end and peel it off.

And for sake of the thread I generally do not tape my bottles. In my trading career so far, I’ve only taped one shipment and coincidentally a bottle in there was my one and only leaker to date.

I hate when people tape my bottles. Removing it then wiping each one down with rubbing alcohol to remove the residue is a pain in the ass. I'd be interested if there was some data to tell us if and how much it actually helps. I've sent hundreds of packages without tape and not had any leaks but that's just me.

I had a guy use duct tape once, oh man that sucked. That's the only time I've actually said something to the sender about it.

I think people are still pretty divided on this so perhaps the best solution is to be explicit with your trading partner. If someone really doesn't want the bottles they're receiving taped then tell the other trader as such. Likewise, it's probably a good idea to ask if someone wants their bottles taped.
